Internal discussions between Meta’s AI Team revealed they’ve been using pirated eBooks for years to train AI models.
Key Details:
“Trying to deal directly with publishers takes a long time,” said Research Engineer Xavier Martinet. “A gazillion startups are using pirated stuff.”
So, Meta’s AI Team used LibGen: a website that provides access to copyrighted eBooks from platforms like Cengage and McGraw Hill.
Research Engineer Nikolay Bashlykov allegedly wrote a Script to remove the words “Pirated,” “Copyright,” and “Acknowledgements” from the datasets of pirated eBooks.
Director of Product Sony Theakanath outlined in an email: “It’s been approved to use LibGen for Llama 3. LibGen is essential to meet State-of-the-Art (SOTA) scores on benchmarks.”
Why It’s Important:
Kadrey v. Meta Platforms, Inc. is a class action complaint that Meta’s AI Team engaged in Copyright Infringement to train AI models by using LibGen.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hired Supreme Court Litigators to defend Meta’s AI Team, showing how high the legal stakes are.

🇺🇸Scale AI CEO Defends Why America Must Beat China

Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang’s belief that “America must win the AI War” sparked mixed reactions at the opening night of Web Summit Qatar, Doha.
Key Details:
During his fireside chat with Wang, Chief Financial Correspondent at Axios Felix Salmon asked anyone who disagreed with Wang’s belief to raise their hand; an “overwhelming” number of hands went up.
Salmon asked Wang to defend his belief. Wang explained that AI will “fundamentally change the nature of national security” by enabling China to potentially “leapfrog” the military dominance of “Western Powers.”
He added that America’s LLMs are “built on free speech” while China’s LLMs are “built on censorship” to reflect “communist society viewpoints.”
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI recently uncovered AI-powered Chinese surveillance tools leveraging ChatGPT to monitor “social media conversations related to Chinese political topics.”
Wang’s Critics argue the idea that a single nation “must win the AI War” is a terrible way to frame AI developments. Instead, we should focus on sharing, collaborating, and cooperating.
