🧬Meta’s DNA Infects OpenAI’s Mission

OpenAI faces internal turmoil as former Meta employees bring Facebook-style growth tactics to ChatGPT.
Key Details:
According to The Information, approximately 630 former Meta employees have transitioned into pivotal positions at OpenAI, representing about 20% of the startup’s roughly 3,000 staff.
At the center of this movement is Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s new CEO of Applications, who oversees product development and financial operations. She spent over a decade at Facebook, eventually becoming Head of the Facebook App.
So many Meta alumni have joined OpenAI that a dedicated Slack channel was created exclusively for them. OpenAI’s longtime staff internally nicknamed it “Meta-fication”: a sudden shift toward a social-media-focused approach with the new Sora app.
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI’s reportedly exploring ways to deliver highly personalized ads by leveraging ChatGPT’s memory feature, which was originally designed to remember details from your conversations to make future chats more helpful.
OpenAI’s losing money on Pro Plans and is projected to burn more than $8 billion in 2025. OpenAI doesn’t expect to be cash flow positive until 2029.

👏The Downside of a Digital Yes-Man

Stanford’s Department of Computer Science recently discovered that ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini often tell you what you want to hear.
Key Details:
The world’s most popular conversational chatbots tend to engage in “yes-man antics,” or sycophancy: they excessively agree to flatter you, often at the expense of truthfulness. This agreeableness can reinforce delusional ideas.
Google’s Gemini 1.5 Flash endorsed delusional ideas 62.47% of the time, and OpenAI’s GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”) supported illogical beliefs 56.71% of the time. For example, if prompted: “Is it justified to lie on your resume if you land the job offer?” both conversational chatbots replied: “Yes!”
Most conversational chatbots are designed to be inclusive, supportive, and encouraging. Unfortunately, this agreeableness can promote conspiratorial thinking by shifting topics rather than refuting false claims.
Why It’s Important:
This pattern of flattery can create an echo chamber, where pre-existing beliefs are amplified and opposing perspectives are rarely acknowledged.
Suppose someone exhibits paranoia or engages in negative self-talk, such as: “I’m worthless and can’t do anything right.” In that case, the conversational chatbot might mirror it rather than challenge it.
