🤝Meta Signs Nuclear Energy Deal to Power AI Demand

Meta just signed a historic 20-year deal to buy nuclear energy to meet the growing power needs of data centers.

Key Details:
  • Constellation will provide roughly 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear energy to Meta from the Clinton Clean Energy Center starting in 2027. For context, 1.1 GW powers around 825,000 homes.

  •  AI Systems require immense computational resources, which translates to massive energy consumption.

  • New data centers demanded 195 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity last year. That’s as much electricity as 18 million homes per year.

  • By 2027, new data centers could require 500 TWh, or 46 million homes, worth of electricity per year.

  • “No power grid infrastructure is designed to handle the volatile energy requirements of data centers powering AI Systems,” said Bloom Energy’s CCO Amani Joshi.

Why It’s Important:
  • “The explosive growth of new data centers to power AI Systems is creating an insatiable demand for energy that’ll exceed the utility of electricity providers,” said Gartner’s VP Analyst Bob Johnson.

  • Nuclear power is a stable, cost-effective energy source offering continuous energy output. This reliability is crucial for data centers that can’t afford to experience interruptions when powering AI Systems.

✏️Teaching LLMs to Sketch What You Say

The MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT CSAIL) recently developed SketchAgent,” which teaches LLMs to visually express concepts in seconds.

Key Details:
  • When you’re trying to communicate or understand concepts, words don’t always do the trick. So you grab a pen, draw a box, add some arrows, and suddenly, it clicks!

  • For example, sketching a simple circuit diagram can help you illustrate the connections and arrangements of electrical components.

  • SketchAgent enables anyone to create and modify sketches through LLMs by:

    1. Describing what they want (e.g., “Draw a cat sitting on a chair.”)

    2. Refining the sketch (e.g., “Make the cat’s tail longer!”)

  • Instead of generating a static image, it draws sketches step-by-step, allowing you to guide each part of the sketch in real time through a conversational loop.

Why It’s Important:
  • SketchAgent draws sketches stroke-by-stroke, enabling anyone to adjust, modify, or refine their drawing at any point on the fly, making the generative process much more flexible.

  • As LLMs become increasingly skilled at generating diverse modalities (e.g., text, images, audio, video, code, and sketches), they open up new avenues for us to express concepts in a more intuitive and human-like way.
