Meta reportedly rolled out a new executive incentive program that could pay out hundreds of millions of dollars if aggressive growth targets are achieved.
Key Details:
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced a new performance-based stock option plan designed to incentivize the social media giant’s top six executives to increase Meta’s “market cap” by about 500% to over $9 trillion by 2031. For context, Meta would be worth more than Germany’s Nominal GDP, one of the largest economies in the world.
The performance-based stock options are split into seven tranches. For the first tranche of stock options to be paid out, Meta’s stock has to hit $1,116.08 per share, which equals a “market cap” of about $2.82 trillion. In simple terms, the social media giant’s top six executives are paid a portion of their pay package each time a tranche is reached.
If all seven tranches are reached, they stand to earn up to $921 million each. Those most likely to receive the biggest pay packages include CTO Andrew Bosworth, CPO Chris Cox, and COO Javier Olivan.
Alongside the performance-based stock options, many were granted a combined $170 million in RSUs that “vest,” or unlock, in quarterly installments. In simple terms, if they keep working at Meta, they slowly unlock shares that become theirs to sell.
Why It’s Important:
Meta’s currently spending upwards of $135 billion annually on AI infrastructure. In other words, Meta’s betting that AI will create entirely new revenue streams that dwarf their current advertising business across Threads, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Meta also just laid off 700 more employees to achieve a startup-like operation that’s more agile and less overly bureaucratic. It’s all signaling a cold, calculated, full-scale commitment to AI.

Wharton professors Steve Shaw and Gideon Nave conducted a large-scale behavioral study involving 1,372 participants to examine how AI disrupts our internal deliberation.
Key Details:
They introduced a new “Tri-System Theory”:
🔴 System 1: Your fast and automatic intuition. For example, flinching at a loud noise.
🟠 System 2: Your slow and deliberate thinking. For example, comparing insurance plans.
🟡 System 3: Your artificial and algorithmic assist. For example, asking ChatGPT to draft a difficult email for you.
Of the 1,372 participants, 79.8% accepted AI-generated answers as their own, even when those answers were factually incorrect.
They coined this phenomenon “cognitive surrender”: we surrender our internal deliberation to AI, letting System 3 override System 2 and System 1.
Why It’s Important:
It turns out human cognition is hardwired from “cognitive miserliness”: the inherent human tendency to conserve mental energy. In other words, our brains constantly prioritize how to be fast, efficient, and good enough for survival. As a result, System 3 is an irresistible shortcut.
Once participants “surrendered” to the AI’s logic, it became incredibly difficult to re-engage System 2. Even when the AI proved clearly wrong, the participants lacked the “cognitive friction” to catch the mistake because the process felt too effortless and frictionless.
