⚙️Meta Unveils AI Assistant and Dozens of AI Characters

Meta officially introduced a series of AI experiences across its consumer apps, including AI stickers, image editing, an AI assistant, and dozens of AI characters.

Key Details:

AI Stickers:

  • This feature allows users to generate customized stickers for their chats and stories effortlessly.

  • Using Emu, the Llama 2 image generation model, Meta’s AI tool transforms text prompts into multiple unique, high-quality stickers in seconds.

  • These new interactive stickers will be available to select English-language users in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook stories over the next month.

Image Editing:

  • This tool allows users to transform or co-create AI-generated images with friends through Instagram with two features: restyle and backdrop.

  • Restyle and backdrop leverage learnings from Meta’s Segment Anything Model (SAM), a segmentation system with zero-shot generalization that can “cut out” any object in any image with a single click.

  • Restyle lets you reimagine your images by applying the visual style you describe. For example, type a detailed prompt like “collage from magazines and newspapers with torn edges.”

  • Backdrop changes the scene or background of your image. Prompts like “surround me with puppies” will cue the tool to create a photo of the primary subject immersed in your described environment.

AI Assistant:

  • Meta AI is a new assistant users can interact with like a person to learn, plan, and connect.

  • In text-based chats, Meta AI can access real-time information through its search partnership with Bing.

  • This assistant will be available on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and Quest 3.

AI Characters:

  • These generative AI characters are meant to be used as personal buddies who drive user engagement and offer productivity-related skills like generating to-do lists.

  • Meta partnered with cultural icons and influencers to play and embody some of these AI characters. They’ll each have profiles on Instagram and Facebook with tailored posts representing their personalities.

  • There are 28 AI characters, like Tom Brady as Bru, a wisecracking sports debater who pulls no punches.

Why It’s Important:

  • VP of Generative AI Ahmad Al-Dahle explained how Meta’s assistant is “inside your chat context. You don’t have to pull yourself out of the context to interact, engage, or get the assistant to help you.”

  • Meta executives believe their unrivaled distribution to billions of daily users across messaging apps is a competitive edge over OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

  • OpenAI kick-started the chatbot race, but Meta’s immense scaling through its social networks could take it over.

📊CIA Builds AI Tool for Intel Gathering

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is reportedly creating AI models to sift through public data for intelligence cues.

Key Details:

  • The AI model will be provided to all 18 U.S. Intelligence Communities to aid in open-source intelligence gathering to find “needles in the needle field.”

  • It allows these agencies to track information back to sources and distribute findings quicker to communicate time-sensitive data.

  • This announcement coincides with China’s aspirations to lead in AI technology globally by the decade’s end.

  • This AI model has the potential for limitless data collection and continuous growth, constrained only by budgetary considerations.
