🚨Microsoft’s AI Copilot Creates Violent Images?!

Senior software engineer Shane Jones discovered a loophole in Microsoft’s Copilot Designer tool, powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 model, to generate violent and sexual images.

Key Details:

• Jones actively tested Microsoft’s Copilot Designer tool in his spare time to identify vulnerabilities and implement prompt engineering to bypass content filters.

• Jones enabled “Red Teaming” methods to deploy a structured testing effort that finds flaws and manages risks. He collected his research and initiated internal reports through company channels.

• Copilot Designer associated demons and monsters with terminology related to abortion rights, depicted teenagers with assault rifles, sexualized images of women, and promoted underage drinking and drug use.

• While Microsoft acknowledged his concerns, the company was unwilling to remove the product as a market offering for users.

• In response, Jones posted a public letter on LinkedIn asking OpenAI’s board members to suspend the DALL-E 3 model for an investigation.

• On Wednesday, he sent a letter about the matter to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan and numerous U.S. senators.

Why It’s Important:

• Jones explained: “Over the last three months, I’ve repeatedly urged Microsoft to remove Copilot Designer from public use until better safeguards could be put in place.”

• He believes Microsoft should add disclosures to the product and change the Google Android app rating to mature.

• This situation emphasizes the harm AI models possess by generating harmful content and allowing users to bypass safeguards with prompt manipulation.

Zora, an NFT social network platform on the Ethereum blockchain, is leveraging AI applications to help creators, brands, and artists better monetize their content through NFTs.

Key Details:

• NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are unique cryptographic tokens on a blockchain that cannot be replicated.

• Cryptocurrency is a decentralized, peer-to-peer digital payment system. Rather than carrying around and exchanging physical money in the real world, cryptocurrency payments exist purely as digital entries to an online database that labels specific transactions.

• Zora co-founder Jacob Horne explained: “Cryptocurrency wants information to be on-chain so that it can be valued and add value to the system.” Similarly, “AI wants information to be on-chain so it can be freely accessed and utilized by the system.”

• Cryptocurrency and AI are complementary technologies with similar universal goals and mutual benefits.

Why It’s Important:

• AI models learn and improve by analyzing vast amounts of data. The more data they have access to, the better they perform. However, unreliable data can promote hallucinations.

• The blockchain is a giant public ledger storing information securely and transparently. This information can’t be easily changed or deleted, making it a reliable source for training AI models.

Respondents voiced concerns surrounding AI models related to privacy, devaluing humanity, societal harm, lack of regulation, and job displacement.
