⚙️Microsoft’s New AI Agents and Phases of Agentic AI

Microsoft recently unveiled two new AI Agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot and outlined three phases of how Agentic AI will transform organizations.

Key Details:

• Microsoft 365 Copilot deploys AI-powered tools across Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote to streamline repetitive workflows.

• For example, a Data Analyst might leverage Microsoft 365 Copilot to access datasets within Excel to calculate total monthly sales growth potential based on simulated scenarios.

• Now, Microsoft 365 Copilot has two new AI Agents with reasoning capabilities: Analyst, which converts raw data into actionable insights in seconds, and Researcher, which performs complex, multi-step research in minutes.

• Microsoft also outlined three phases of how Agentic AI will transform organizations in their 2025 Work Trend Index Annual Report:

  1. Phase 1: Every employee has an AI assistant that helps them work better and faster.

  2. Phase 2: Every team has AI Agents that help them automate specific workflows.

  3. Phase 3: Every organization manages AI Agents that independently execute entire business processes.

Why It’s Important:

• “The SaaS applications that exist today will collapse in the Agentic AI era,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “They’re essentially just CRUD databases with a bunch of business logic.”

• In other words, SaaS applications are essentially just a simple User Interface (UI) on top of CRUD databases, which enable humans to Create, Read, Update, and Destroy. In the near future, you’ll still have the same underlying CRUD databases but with AI Agents interacting with them instead of humans. Simply put, SaaS applications like Slack or GitHub will look way different.

🚨Ex-OpenAI Staff and Domain Experts Challenge OpenAI

Former OpenAI employees, domain experts in corporate governance, and representatives of non-profit organizations are advocating to stop OpenAI’s transition into a for-profit enterprise.

Key Details:

• “That’s why we’re a non-profit initiative,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in 2017. “We don’t ever want to be making decisions to benefit shareholders. The only people we want to be accountable to is humanity as a whole.”

• OpenAI was founded to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that benefits all of humanity rather than “the private gain of any person.”

• OpenAI is currently in the process of restructuring into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) that’s no longer controlled by a non-profit Board of Directors (BofD).

• They argue this restructuring contradicts OpenAI’s founding purpose and public promises. OpenAI was founded because of concerns about AGI being developed by a for-profit enterprise.

• They also argue this restructuring would benefit OpenAI’s shareholders at the public’s expense and officially transition OpenAI from an open-source, non-profit initiative into a closed-source, for-profit enterprise that’s effectively controlled by the financial interests of shareholders.

Why It’s Important:

• OpenAI previously secured a $6.6 billion Series E funding round at a $157 billion valuation. More recently, OpenAI just raised a $40 billion Series F funding round at a $300 billion valuation.

• However, SoftBank Group Corp.’s $40 billion investment is contingent on OpenAI successfully restructuring into a Delaware PBC. So, OpenAI has a lot riding on this restructuring.
