Microsoft just introduced “Microfluidics,” which prevents advanced AI chips from overheating when powering AI breakthroughs.
Key Details:
Today’s frontier AI models are getting bigger, faster, and hotter. In other words, the advanced AI chips that run your favorite conversational chatbots generate massive amounts of heat. This heat forces these advanced AI chips to slow down or “throttle” to avoid damage, which reduces speed and efficiency.
The two main traditional cooling methods include fans, which blow air to dissipate heat, and cold plates, which use liquid coolant to carry heat away. Both methods face a massive bottleneck: They function on the exterior, never reaching the hottest parts on the interior.
“Microfluidics” is a new cooling method where tiny liquid-filled channels are etched directly onto the back of advanced AI chips to remove heat more efficiently. These tiny liquid-filled channels are microscopic and shaped using bio-inspired patterns, such as leaf veins or butterfly wings, to cool hotspots evenly.
Why It’s Important:
It removes heat up to 3x more efficiently than traditional cold plates, reducing the maximum temperature rise of core materials within advanced AI chips by 65%.
Basically, “Microfluidics” keeps advanced AI chips much cooler than before, which helps them run faster and last longer without overheating.

SoftBank Group Corp., Oracle, and OpenAI have announced plans to build five new data centers in the U.S. by 2026 that aim to deliver over 7 GW of computing power.
Key Details:
It’s all part of The Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative led by OpenAI to build cutting-edge AI infrastructure across America over the next four years.
The debut site is located in Abilene, TX. It’s designed to house up to 400,000 NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchips and deliver more than 1.2 Gigawatts (GW) of computing power at full capacity.
“What we see today is a massive compute crunch,” said OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar. “There’s not enough compute to do all the things AI can do.” In other words, the technology’s potential far exceeds the AI infrastructure currently in place to support it.
Why It’s Important:
AI requires immense computational resources to function, which translates to massive energy consumption. This sudden surge in energy consumption can strain local power grids, causing less-than-ideal flows of electricity to GPUs and ultimately reducing processing efficiency.
To remove this bottleneck, Big Tech companies are investing tens of billions of dollars in nuclear power because it’s a cost-efficient energy source that offers continuous energy output. In simple terms, AI needs a lot of electricity all the time, and nuclear power operates 24×7.
