🤝Microsoft’s New Tech-Labor Partnership

Microsoft and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) announced a partnership to ensure workers’ voices are heard when developing and implementing AI systems.
Key Details:
This agreement states that Microsoft will remain neutral in efforts by unions to encourage workers to become members.
The neutrality framework confirms the joint commitment to respect the right of employees to form or join unions and enhances labor-management relationships.
Microsoft President Brad Smith stated the “neutrality agreement provides a high level of commitment and clarity as to how we’ll work with the AFL-CIO if we have employees pursuing the formation of a union.”
Why It’s Important:
This partnership allows collective bargaining agreements to support workers in an era of rapid technological change.
Microsoft will provide learning opportunities for workers and students on AI software and implement direct feedback from labor leaders.
MISTRAL
⚙️Mistral Pushes the Frontier of Open Models

French startup Mistral launched Mixtral, an open-source AI model combining the predictions of multiple “expert” systems specialized in specific portions of data.
Key Details:
The venture secured a mind-blowing $415M Series A round, valuing the company at $2B.
Mixtral outperforms Meta’s Llama 2 and OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 on most benchmarks while operating 6X faster.
Mixtral is a sparse mixture-of-experts network decoder-only model. In simple terms, a feedforward block (i.e., pathway within a control system) selects from a set of 8 “experts” to process a prompt multiple times and generate a text response.
Why It’s Important:
Mixtral increases parameters while controlling cost and latency. So, this AI model functions at higher performance levels with fewer hallucinations at a fraction of the cost.
Compared to Meta’s Llama 2, Mixtral is 23.7% more truthful and displays less bias on the BBQ benchmark.
