Google DeepMind unexpectedly open-sourced “AlphaFold 3” for academic use, potentially accelerating scientific discovery and drug development.
Key Details:
“AlphaFold 3” is an AI model that predicts the structure and interactions of all of life’s molecules by analyzing a broad spectrum of Biomolecules.
Biomolecules are chemical compounds found in living organisms. They’re the building blocks of life and perform essential functions in living organisms.
Important Biomolecules include DNA, RNA, and Ligands (i.e., a small molecule, ion, or protein that binds to the DNA Double Helix).
“AlphaFold 3” boasts a 50% improvement in predicting how medications interact with proteins in the human body. The AI model has also mapped over 200 million protein structures.
Now, academics and researchers can access “AlphaFold 3” for academic use and non-commercial purposes.
Why It’s Important:
Isomorphic Labs, a digital biology company partnered with Google DeepMind, has already secured over $3 billion in pharmaceutical partnerships to provide commercial access to “AlphaFold 3.”
By visualizing how different molecules interact with shifts in protein structure, scientists can better understand how cells function.

MIT CSAIL Researchers developed “LucidSim,” a framework that trains four-legged robots to navigate the real world using generated images.
Key Details:
“LucidSim” generates diverse images with detailed physical properties. For example, it captures Newton’s Laws of Motion to determine the relationships between physical objects and the forces acting upon them.
Then, these diverse images are used to train an AI model to learn Visual Parkour: the ability to navigate complex environments by running, jumping, and maneuvering over obstacles.
Once the AI model is trained on the diverse images generated by “LucidSim,” it’s transferred into a four-legged robot’s Robot Control System (RCS).
RCS enables the four-legged robot to use the AI model’s learned knowledge to navigate the real world.
“LucidSim” allowed the four-legged robots to navigate obstacles and chase balls with up to 88% accuracy.
Why It’s Important:
How do robots learn to jump over boxes autonomously? Currently, Tech Giants rely on digital environments to simulate real-world robotic training. However, these digital environments lack realism.
To address this issue, “LucidSim” offers a diverse learning environment for robots filled with realism through generated images.
