đMysterious AI Models Appear in LMSYS Chatbot Arena

A series of mysterious AI models called âupcoming-gpt-mini,â âcolumn-r,â and âcolumn-uâ appeared in the LMSYS Chatbot Arena.
Key Details:
The new AI models were available in the LMSYS Chatbot Arenaâs âBattleâ section, which allows website visitors to compare how AI models tackle user queries to generate outputs.
âupcoming-gpt-miniâ identifies itself as OpenAIâs ChatGPT, while âcolumn-râ and âcolumn-uâ refused to reveal any identifying details.
âupcoming-gpt-miniâ is a cost-effective Small Language Model (SLM) that requires less compute and energy to operate.
âThe process is ludicrously energy intensive, with experts estimating the AI industry could soon suck up as much electricity as an entire country,â said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI has previously tested unreleased AI models in the LMSYS Chatbot Arena, with âgpt2-chatbotâ appearing before releasing GPT-4o (âoâ for âomniâ).
Why Itâs Important:
Q* (âQ-Starâ) refers to OpenAIâs project to develop an AI algorithm that automates processes and solves some of the worldâs most pressing issues.
OpenAI users speculate âupcoming-gpt-miniâ creates the conditions for Q* (âQ-Starâ) to become a reality. OpenAI will use âupcoming-gpt-miniâ to reduce energy requirements and save compute while incorporating Q* (âQ-Starâ) variants to equip the AI model with superintelligence.

OpenAI whistleblowers filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), alleging the company illegally prohibited employees from warning regulators about AI risks.
Key Details:
The whistleblowers claim OpenAI issued overly restrictive employment, severance, and non-disclosure agreements with penalties to prevent employees from criticizing OpenAI or communicating securities violations with the SEC.
According to a seven-page letter sent to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey earlier this month, OpenAI incentivized staff to waive their federal rights to whistleblower compensation.
OpenAIâs exit documents also contained a non-disparagement clause. If employees refuse to sign the exit documents, OpenAI threatens to take away their vested equity in the startup.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X: âThere was a provision about potential equity cancellation in our previous exit documents. It shouldnât have been something we had in our documents.â
Why Itâs Important:
âThese contracts send a message that we donât want employees talking to federal regulators,â said one of the anonymous whistleblowers. âI donât believe AI companies can build safe technologies for public interest if they shield themselves from scrutiny and dissent.â
OpenAI spokesperson Hannah Wong explained: âOur whistleblower policy protects employeesâ rights to make protected disclosures.â

AI RESEARCH
đŠŸArtificial âMusclesâ for Safer, Softer Robots
Northwestern University (NU) engineers developed a new device called âSoft Actuatorâ that enables robots to move by expanding and contracting like human muscles.
âSoft Actuatorâ is a cylindrical, worm-like, soft artificial robot bicep made of 3D-printed rubber that mimics muscle movements.
In experiments, the cylindrical, worm-like, soft artificial robot bicep navigated tight, hairpin curves in a narrow pipe-like environment. It also repeatedly lifted a 500-gram (gm) weight 5,000 times.
The âSoft Actuatorâ could be used to develop inexpensive, flexible robots that are safer and more practical for real-world applications.
âIf a soft artificial robot bicep hit a person, it wouldnât hurt nearly as much as getting hit with a rigid, hard robot component. Our Soft Actuator could be used in robots designed for human-centric environments,â said Ryan Truby, Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at NU.
