Elon Musk’s Neuralink, a startup building a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) to translate thoughts into actions, successfully implanted a second brain chip.

Key Details:
  • Neuralink’s PRIME Study aims to determine if the startup’s N1 Implant can restore autonomy to people living with quadriplegia (i.e., paralysis of all four limbs).

  • The N1 Implant is a small, coin-sized device that rests beneath the skull. It contains flexible threads that insert into specific brain regions.

  • It interprets a person’s neural activity, allowing patients to control a computer or smartphone without wires or physical movement.

  • Alex, PRIME Study’s second patient, has been leveraging the N1 Implant to play video games like Counter-Strike 2.

  • It took Alex “less than five minutes to start controlling a computer cursor with his mind.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Elon Musk explained: “If someone has lost their arms or legs, we can sync Tesla’s Optimus with Neuralink’s N1 Implant,” allowing them to control robotic limbs with their brain.

  • Neuralink’s next product is called “Blindsight,” which aims to restore the vision of individuals who were born blind.

ANTHROPIC

👨‍⚖️Anthropic Sued for Copyright Infringement

Image Source: Canva AI Image Generator

A group of authors filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging the AI research company committed “large-scale theft” by training AI systems on pirated copies of copyrighted books.

Key Details:
  • The lawsuit accuses Anthropic of using a dataset called “The Pile” that contains publicly available copyrighted content from books, articles, code, and webpages to train AI systems.

  • “It’s no exaggeration to say that Anthropic’s AI systems seek to profit from strip-mining the human expression,” the lawsuit states.

  • EleutherAI, a non-profit AI research lab, curated “The Pile” to help developers and researchers train AI models.

  • Tech Giants like Apple, Nvidia, and Salesforce have also used “The Pile” to access thousands of YouTube videos and train AI models without the creator’s consent.

  • An investigation by Proof News found that Tech Giants used subtitles from 173,536 YouTube videos across 48,000 channels.

Why It’s Important:
  • Tech Giants and AI firms claim AI models fall under “fair use” because training AI models on publicly available copyrighted content enables the AI models to learn from works to create original content, not copies of the training data.

  • Tech Giants and AI firms technically avoid “fault” because they’re not directly scraping publicly available copyrighted content to curate datasets. EleutherAI would be at “fault.”

AI RESEARCH

💨AI Solves Rubik’s Cube in Seconds?!

Researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) developed a new technique to find shorter solutions for a Rubik’s Cube.

A 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube has six faces and twelve possible actions with over 43 quintillion possible combinations, requiring extensive computational resources for AI models to solve.

“DeepCubeA” is a program designed to solve a Rubik’s Cube in the most efficient way possible.

“DeepCubeA” leverages two powerful AI frameworks:

  1. Neural Networks (NNs): The NNs learn how “far” it is from solving a Rubik’s Cube with each action. This information is used to create a heuristic function.

  2. A* Search Algorithm: It uses the heuristic function to explore the series of moves more likely to solve a Rubik’s Cube the fastest.

“DeepCubeA” offers a program that can solve complex problems with limited computing power.
