🇺🇸Nvidia Responds to U.S. Export Controls
Nvidia plans to release products crafted for the Chinese market after U.S. officials tightened export rules on selling powerful AI chips to China.
Key Details:
In response to the Biden administration blocking China’s access to advanced AI chips, Nvidia developed the HGX H20 server and two novel GPUs, L20 PCle and L2 PCle, to circumvent the revised framework of U.S. export controls.
This fresh series of data-center GPUs offers high-performance density with limited compute capabilities to ensure the hardware doesn’t exceed 4800 TOPS (i.e., how many computing operations AI chips can handle in one second).
Wells Fargo Analyst Aaron Rankers wrote: “While we consider these three new GPUs positive, we expect investors to question whether Nvidia is being too aggressive in its efforts to avoid U.S. restrictions.”
Why It’s Important:
Nvidia has commanded more than 90% share of China’s $7 billion AI chip market. However, the U.S. restrictions create opportunities for domestic firms such as Huawei Technologies to make inroads.
Chinese internet giant Baidu, which operates the Ernie Large Language Model (LLM), ordered 1,600 Huawei Technologies’ 910B Ascend AI chips for 200 servers.

⚙️OpenAI’s Data Partnership Program
OpenAI recently announced Data Partnerships, a collaboration with third-party organizations to build public and private data sets for AI model training.
Key Details:
The data sets used to train the most popular AI models contain flaws and biases.
OpenAI is partnering with outside institutions to create new, improved data sets that deeply understand all subject matters, industries, cultures, and languages.
As part of the Data Partnership Program, OpenAI says it’ll collect “large-scale” data sets that “reflect human society” through analyzing a wide range of modalities, including images, audio, and video that “express human intention” across different languages, topics, and formats.
Why It’s Important:
Despite OpenAI’s optimistic agenda to improve data-set building, the company is fueled by commercial motivations to improve the performance of its AI models.
OpenAI faces lawsuits and open letters from creatives alleging the company leveraged their work to train chatbots without their permission or payment.
