🔋Nvidia Unveils Newest Chip for Training AI Models
Nvidia just unveiled the HGX H200, a graphics processing unit designed to enhance the training and deployment of AI models powering the generative AI boom.
Key Details:
Lack of computing power (i.e., compute) has been a significant bottleneck of AI progress this past year, hindering the launch of new AI software. In response, Nvidia released the HGX H200, which features 141GB of next-generation “HBM3” memory.
These features allow the chip to perform quick “inferences” or run live data through trained AI models to make predictions or solve tasks, generating outputs nearly twice as fast.
Nvidia claims the HGX H200 is compatible with the company’s prior AI chips. So, ventures who trained AI tools with the HGX H100 won’t need to adjust their server systems to integrate the new hardware.
Why It’s Important:
Excitement over Nvidia’s AI GPUs has supercharged the company’s stock, boasting a 230% increase in 2023. Nvidia estimates $16 billion of revenue for its fiscal third quarter, up 170% from a year ago.
The HGX H200 will compete with AMD’s MI300X GPU to provide additional memory for larger models like Meta’s Llama 2.

💵OpenAI Poaches Google Talent with Multimillion-Dollar Offers
OpenAI’s recruiters target senior AI talent from Google with highly lucrative annual compensation packages worth $5 million to $10 million, mostly in stock.
Key Details:
OpenAI is specifically selecting Google employees developing Google’s Gemini family of AI models.
The multimillion-dollar offers arrive as the startup’s employee stock sale nears completion, potentially tripling its valuation to over $80 billion.
New AI hardware projects, including Microsoft’s Athena processor and AMD’s MI300X GPU, could provide OpenAI with hardware support to outcompete Google’s Cloud Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI and Google are locked in a fierce battle for talent, leveraging computing resources and boosted compensation packages to poach employee talent.
According to The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes Google possesses a computing advantage over his company. So, he is seeking additional financial backing from Microsoft to build “superintelligent” tools that are as smart as humans.
