NVIDIA

NVIDIA used thousands of YouTube videos and Netflix films to train AI models without the creator’s consent.

Key Details:
  • Leaked documents, internal emails, and Slack channels revealed that NVIDIA employees scraped “a human lifetime” of copyrighted content to train AI models for the company’s Omniverse Platform.

  • A Netflix spokesperson told 404 Media that NVIDIA doesn’t have permission to acquire, process, or store any Netflix films.

  • NVIDIA employees scraped 80 years of copyrighted content daily by developing frameworks that refresh IP addresses to avoid being blocked by YouTube and Netflix.

Why It’s Important:
  • NVIDIA employees were told this was an “executive decision,” and they had “umbrella approval” to grab whatever they could.

  • Earlier this year, an investigation by Proof News found that Tech Giants used subtitles from 173,536 YouTube videos across 48,000 channels to curate datasets for AI model training.

GROQ

💵AI Chip Startup Groq Valued at $2.8 Billion?!

Groq, a hardware company that delivers exceptional compute speed, has raised $640 million at a $2.8 billion valuation.

Key Details:
  • Groq created the world’s first Language Processing Units (LPUs), which are specifically tailored for the efficient processing of language models.

  • Groq identified that current processors, such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), can’t handle the speed and demand required to scale AI models in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner.

  • Groq provides an LPU-powered platform called GroqCloud that enables developers to access open-source AI models like Meta’s Llama 3.1.

Why It’s Important:
  • Unlike GPUs that do many things at once (i.e., parallel processing), LPUs work on one task after another (i.e., sequential processing), which is perfect for understanding and generating language.

  • Imagine LPUs as a relay race in which each runner (e.g., AI chip) passes the baton (e.g., data) to the next runner (e.g., AI chip), making everything run super fast.

  • Groq’s LPUs are a potential competitor to NVIDIA’s GPUs. Its specialized architecture boasts superior processing speeds for tasks related to LLMs.

BIG TECH LAWSUITS

👨‍⚖️Alphabet’s Google Illegally Monopolizes Online Search

On Monday, Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that Alphabet’s Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online search.

Alphabet’s Google paid billions of dollars to create exclusive agreements with mobile phone manufacturers and browser developers to make Google Search the default search engine for consumers.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland called the decision a “historic win for the American people.” He believes these exclusive deals stifled competition and harmed consumers by limiting their choices.

Alphabet’s Google argued that the company’s dominance in online search was due to users preferring Google Search. In other words, the company’s market position was earned fairly through superior search engine offerings.

The Google Search era may be ending, allowing Perplexity AI’s free AI-powered answer engine to continue growing in popularity and being known as the Google Search killer.
