The Linux Foundation announced Open Platform for Enterprise AI (OPEA), a project to foster the development of open and multi-provider generative AI systems.

Key Details:
  • A coalition of technology companies, including Anyscale, Intel, IBM’s Red Hat, Hugging Face, and VMware, will collaborate on OPEA to create “a detailed, composable framework that stands at the forefront of technology stacks.”

  • OPEA will offer generative AI for enterprises to autocomplete reports, develop spreadsheet formulas, and streamline customer support tickets.

  • Ibrahim Haddad, Linux Foundation’s VP of Strategic Programs, explained: “OPEA’s goal is to develop scalable GenAI systems that support toolchains and compilers, which enable AI workloads to run across different platforms.”

  • OPEA will also prioritize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): a new AI framework that combines Large Language Models (LLMs) with external knowledge bases to improve the accuracy of AI model responses.

Why It’s Important:
  • OPEA aims to create a standardized framework for GenAI tools, making it easier for businesses to adopt GenAI workflows for various enterprise tasks.

  • Enterprises aren’t locked into specific providers. Instead, they can choose the best tools and functionalities from multiple platforms based on their needs.

Reka released Reka Core, a frontier-class multimodal language model that can handle text, image, audio, and video inputs.

Key Details:
  • Reka Core was trained from scratch on thousands of GPUs with publicly available, licensed, and synthetic data.

  • Reka Core showcases multimodal (e.g., image and video) understanding, a 128K context window, coding and agent workflows, and multilingual textual data from 32 languages.

  • Reka Core outperformed Claude 3 Opus in multimodal human evaluations, beat Gemini 1.5 Pro on video tasks, and was competitive with OpenAI’s GPT-4 on image understanding.

  • Reka Core was developed by former Google DeepMind employees and Meta researchers and is partnering with government organizations like Snowflake, Oracle, and AI Singapore.

Why It’s Important:
  • Reka Core’s dynamic multimodal and multilingual models allow enterprises to unlock more value from their data, streamline complex tasks, and realize cost efficiencies.

  • Reka Core is a versatile tool that can handle different data formats and perform well across modalities (e.g., text, image, or video), unlocking new use cases.

AI RESEARCH

⚽️Google DeepMind Robots Play Soccer?!

Google DeepMind researchers published an article showcasing bipedal robots (i.e., robots that walk on two legs like humans) playing soccer with impressive motor skills and multi-contact motions.

The researchers developed a deep reinforcement learning-based framework to help the bipedal robots process complex patterns from data and learn through trial and error. The bipedal robots exhibited dynamic motor skills, including recovering from falls and engaging in tactics like defending the ball against opponents.

The AI-trained bipedal robots walked 3X faster, turned around 5X faster, and recovered from falls 63% quicker.
