OpenAI board member Helen Toner recently addressed why Sam Altman was fired during an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Key Details:
Toner claims that safety concerns surrounding Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) weren’t the reason for firing Altman. Instead, it was a lack of trust.
She explained that dissolving his position was consistent with her duty to ensure AI systems are scaled responsibly.
In October, Toner co-wrote a paper on AI safety and the negative impacts of OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT. Altman confronted Toner, stating she harmed the company by criticizing it publicly.
Altman tried to convince board members to fire Toner by developing a misleading perception of her lack of loyalty to the startup.
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI’s board of directors was surprised by staffers’ willingness to abandon the company and follow Altman to Microsoft.
During the heated negotiations, an OpenAI lawyer believed firing Altman could cause the company to collapse. Toner responded, “That would be consistent with the mission.” The board’s responsibility is to “humanity,” not investors.

During an investor event on Wednesday, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft confirmed they would purchase AMD’s Instinct MI300X chip to build language models.
Key Details:
AMD’s horsepower-packed MI300X processor is built on the CDNA3 architecture, which delivers 192GB of high-performance memory that transfers data faster to fuel larger AI systems.
AMD CEO Lisa Su explained: “This performance directly translates into a better user experience. When you ask a model something, you’d like it to respond faster.”
Meta believes it will use MI300X GPUs for AI inference workloads like image editing or operating assistants.
Why It’s Important:
Technology companies and cloud providers integrating AMD’s latest hardware into existing AI models could lower developer costs and halt Nvidia’s surging AI chip growth.
This commitment by Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft signals that companies are seeking alternatives for Nvidia’s expensive processors.
