OpenAI Co-Founder Ilya Sutskever launched Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI Inc.), a startup focused on reducing the long-term risks of “superintelligent” AI systems.

Key Details:
  • Sutskever was OpenAI’s Chief Scientist and Superalignment Team Co-Leader before departing to pursue personally meaningful projects.

  • The Superalignment Team was built to address the question: “How do we ensure AI systems much smarter than humans follow human intent?”

  • However, OpenAI slowly redirected computational resources supplied to the Superalignment Team for other AI efforts.

  • After resigning as Co-Leader of the Superalignment Team, Jan Leike posted on X: “Safety culture has taken a backseat to shiny products.”

  • SSI Inc. raised $1 billion in cash to hire top talent, acquire computing power, and develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with “safety, security, and progress insulated from short-term commercial pressures.”

Why It’s Important:
  • This moment marks the first time a startup has raised $1 billion in cash after only being around for three months.

  • Sutskever is leading SSI Inc. with Daniel Gross, who managed Apple’s search engine projects, and Daniel Levy, who led OpenAI’s Optimization Team.

NVIDIA

🏛NVIDIA Hit with Antitrust Legal Order?!

The Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly issued a legal order to NVIDIA to examine the company’s AI chip market practices over antitrust concerns.

Key Details:
  • On Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that NVIDIA received a legal order from the DOJ over antitrust worries.

  • NVIDIA controls more than 80% of the AI chip market and recently acquired “Run:ai,” a startup that helps operations teams optimize their AI hardware infrastructure.

  • AI firms claim the chipmaker redirects NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs to others if they’re caught purchasing AMD, Intel, or Qualcomm AI hardware.

  • On Wednesday, NVIDIA released a statement claiming the DOJ didn’t issue a legal order to examine the company’s structure.

  • a NVIDIA spokesperson said: “We’re happy to answer any questions regulators may have about our business. We win on merit, as reflected in our value to customers.”

  • NVIDIA’s stock dropped nearly 10%, wiping over $279 billion off the chipmaker’s market capitalization or “market cap” (i.e., how much a company is worth).

Why It’s Important:
  • “Run:ai” is NVIDIA’s largest acquisition since purchasing Mellanox Technologies for $6.9 billion in 2019 to supply end-to-end Ethernet solutions.

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continues investigating “whether investments pursued by dominant companies risk distorting innovation and undermining fair competition.”

AI RESEARCH

🕹AI Agents Build Civilizations

Altera unveiled “Project Sid,” the first simulation of over 1,000 AI Agents collaborating in virtual worlds to build economies, cultures, religions, and governments.

AI Agents operate autonomously across data types (e.g., text, images, video, audio, and code) without human intervention to scan environments and formulate decisions.

The AI Agents roamed Minecraft, completing over 200 tasks, such as obtaining high-level items like diamond ore to craft pickaxes, swords, and jukeboxes.

“Project Sid” aims to discover how AI Agents can be organized, pro-human motivated, and communicate clearly in open-world environments.
