OPENAI

⚠️OpenAI Detects Misbehavior in Reasoning Engines

OpenAI recently explored how to monitor and mitigate misbehavior in Reasoning Engines.

Key Details:
  • Reasoning Engines like OpenAI o3 use Chain-of-Thought (CoT) to break down complex problems into manageable steps. CoT outlines how Reasoning Engines “think” in a way humans can understand.

  • Monitoring their “thinking” has allowed us to detect misbehavior like being deceptive or giving up on challenging problems.

  • OpenAI discovered that if you optimize CoTs to adhere to specific criteria, Reasoning Engines quickly learn to produce CoTs that appear compliant with your specific criteria but mask underlying misbehavior.

Why It’s Important:
  • Reasoning Engines are learning to “play the game” or produce CoTs that appear to satisfy specific criteria.

  • This discovery means that superficial alliance doesn’t guarantee genuine alignment.

🔍China Gives LLMs Real-Time Lookup Abilities

Alibaba Group developed “Self-Taught Reasoner with Tools (START),” which enables LLMs to access external tools through code execution.

Key Details:
  • LLMs are trained on massive datasets of text from the Internet. These datasets form the basis of their knowledge. This knowledge allows them to answer your questions.

  • But this knowledge is static. So, LLMs struggle with complex problems that require real-time information. START helps LLMs execute code to access external tools that provide real-time information.

  • It also reminds LLMs when to use external tools through Hint-infer, which inserts artificially designed hints during AI Inference like: “Wait, maybe using Python here is a good idea.”

Why It’s Important:
  • START enables LLMs to “go out and look things up” or “use a calculator” when they need to.

  • Imagine asking: “What’s the weather like in Colorado?” The LLM recognizes the need for real-time information to answer your question and executes code to access a Weather API.

AI AND ROBOTS

🧠Paralyzed Patient Controls Robotic Arm With Brain

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) developed a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) that allowed a paralyzed patient to control a robotic arm just by imagining himself performing actions like grasping, moving, and dropping objects.

The BCI records brain activity through tiny sensors implanted on the brain’s surface. Then, AI-based algorithms analyze the recorded brain activity and identify patterns to create a decoder that translates the brain signals into specific commands.
