OPENAI

🥊OpenAI Employees Threaten to Quit

The OpenAI drama continues, with employees signing a letter demanding the board of directors to resign and the company battling interim CEO drama.

Key Details:
  • Over 750 of 770 OpenAI employees signed a letter to the board of directors, threatening to quit and seek Microsoft employment because they can’t work “with people that lack competence, judgment, and care for our mission and employees.”

  • Chief Scientist IIya Sutskever, who initially played a critical role in ousting Altman, signed the employee letter explaining: “I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I will do everything I can to reunite the company.”

  • Before hiring Emmett Shear as the new interim CEO, OpenAI approached Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, and Nat Friedman, Former CEO of Github, who both declined the offer.

  • Emmett published a 30-day roadmap explaining his direction for the company.

  • OpenAI presented a potential merger deal with its competitor, Anthropic, a safety and research company focused on building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems, which declined the proposal.

Why It’s Important:
  • Microsoft hired Sam Altman to prevent him from joining a rival company like Google or Amazon. However, Microsoft has a 49% stake in OpenAI and will have to balance resources between Altman’s in-house team and OpenAI’s product roadmap.

  • With OpenAI employees threatening to resign from the company if the current board doesn’t reinstate Altman, Microsoft’s balance sheet will have to address onboarding talent and financing Altman’s ambitions, like consumer hardware devices and low-cost AI chips.

AMAZON

📦Amazon’s Free Generative AI Courses

Amazon announced “AI Ready,” a new commitment to provide free AI skills training for millions of people globally by 2025.

Key Details:
  • The company is launching new initiatives for learners and scaling existing free AI training programs to remove barriers to accessing these critical skills.

  • These new initiatives include eight generative AI courses, Amazon Web Services (AWS) generative AI scholarships, and a partnership with Code.org to offer cloud computing skills training.

  • Through the AWS Generative AI Scholarship, AWS will provide “Udacity scholarships, valued over $12 million, to more than 50,000 university students.”

Why It’s Important:
  • The demand for an AI-savvy workforce has never been greater. A recent study by research firm Access Partnership discovered:

    1. Hiring AI-skilled talent is a priority for 75% of employers, with three out of four unable to meet their AI talent needs.

    2. Employers anticipate workers will earn 47% more in salaries if they upskill in AI.

    3. 93% of businesses expect to integrate AI solutions across their organization in the next five years.
