🧨OpenAI Fires Back at Elon Musk

OpenAI, an AI venture pioneering conversational chatbots, responded to billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s lawsuit by claiming he had little impact on the startup’s development and success.
Key Details:
In a blog post authored by OpenAI’s executives—Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba—the startup described that Elon raised less than $45 million despite his initial commitment to provide $1 billion.
When starting OpenAI in 2015, Greg and Sam planned to raise $100 million. Elon explained in an email: “We need to go with a much bigger number than $100M to avoid sounding hopeless… we should say we’re starting with $1B… I’ll cover whatever anyone else doesn’t provide.”
OpenAI realized building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) required vast amounts of computing, and they needed “a lot more capital to succeed at [their] mission.”
In 2017, Elon believed the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity. He wanted to merge OpenAI with Tesla, have majority equity, initial board control, and be the CEO.
In 2018, Elon forwarded an email to OpenAI stating the startup should “attach to Tesla as its cash cow” because “even raising millions won’t be enough.”
Why It’s Important:
Elon posted on X, “Change your name to ClosedAI, and I’ll drop the lawsuit.” These email receipts dampen Elon’s credibility but don’t address the core issue of the lawsuit: OpenAI’s sudden transition into a closed-source maximum-profit company.
The email receipts inadvertently revealed that OpenAI was lying from the start. Ilya’s email to Elon stated: “The Open in OpenAI means that everyone should benefit from the fruits of AI after it’s built, but it’s ok not to share the science. Sharing everything is the right strategy in the short term for recruitment purposes.”
In other words, OpenAI’s legal filing as a “charitable” organization that offers open-source technology for the public’s benefit was a recruiting ploy.

STABILITY AI
⚙️Stability AI’s Fast 3D Object Generator

Image Source: Canva AI Image Generator
Stability AI partnered with Tripo AI to develop TripoSR, an AI model that generates high-quality 3D models from a single image in under a second.
Key Details:
TripoSR utilizes an AI system containing millions of parameters to convert 2D images into detailed 3D objects.
When tested on a Nvidia A100 processor, TripoSR generates draft-quality 3D outputs (i.e., textured meshes) in under 0.5 seconds.
The 3D reconstruction model leverages transformer architecture to achieve “fast feed-forward 3D generation.”
Transformer architecture is a neural network that “transforms” an input sequence into an output sequence by learning the context while tracking relationships between sequence components.
Why It’s Important:
TripoSR speeds up and simplifies the process of creating 3D objects. Traditionally, creating high-quality 3D models can be time-consuming and complex, requiring skills and software.
TripoSR makes generating draft-quality 3D models more accessible to a broader audience.

AI RESEARCH
🪖U.S. Army Tests AI Models as Battle Advisors
The U.S. Army is testing popular AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 to develop military strategies in war game simulations.
Researchers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory are integrating GPT-4 tactics into a military science fiction video game called Starcraft II.
Starcraft II, a real-time strategy game from Blizzard Entertainment, provides realistic combat scenarios with military units and custom battlefields. GPT-4 acts as the right-hand assistant to a virtual military commander to destroy all enemy forces and snatch a crucial zone on the map.
The Department of Defense (DOD) has identified over 180 military use cases for AI models. Experts are concerned that leveraging AI models for military decisions raises ethical concerns.
