🧯OpenAI Fires Researchers for Leaking Information

According to The Information, OpenAI fired two researchers for leaking sensitive information about the company’s roadmap to external sources.
Key Details:
Leopold Aschenbrenner was on the superalignment team and focused on weak-to-strong generalization: when a less powerful AI model (e.g., “weak supervisor”) guides a more powerful AI model (e.g., “strong learner”) to achieve better generalization on new tasks.
Pavel Izmailov was on the superintelligent alignment team to develop scientific and technical breakthroughs to steer and control AI models smarter than us.
The nature of the leaked information is unknown. However, internal sources claim they were influential in leaking the Q-Star (Q*) project during OpenAI’s internal turmoil in 2023.
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI doesn’t seem open about sharing research roadmaps containing sensitive details about future projects, algorithms, and functionalities to maintain a competitive edge in AI advancements.
In 2015, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman approached Elon Musk to create an open-source, non-profit company to explore how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could benefit humanity.
Musk’s lawsuit alleges that OpenAI “set the founding agreement aflame” in 2023 by transforming into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

🍎Apple’s AI-Focused M4 Chips for Macs

Apple is reportedly preparing to overhaul its entire lineup of Macs with AI-focused M4 chips to boost performance, enhance power efficiency, and streamline on-device AI tasks.
Key Details:
Last year, Apple released the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, showcasing tighter transistor densities with faster performance and better battery life.
The new M4-equipped Macs will be offered in three tiers: entry-level Donan, high-performance Brava, and top-end Hidra.
Apple aims to release the updated computers late this year and early next year in the new iMacs, an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, a high-performance 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac Minis.
Why It’s Important:
Apple plans to boost sluggish computer sales by offering a new family of in-house processes designed to enhance on-device AI tasks and integrate them into the next version of MacOS.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will use an improved version of the 3nm process, which creates transistors that are 3 nanometers (nm) wide. This process allows more transistors to be packed onto a chip, developing faster and more powerful chips.

🚀Mistral’s Massive Open-Source LLM
Mistral AI released Mixtral 8x22B, a massive Large Language Model (LLM) with over 176 billion parameters and a context window size of 65,000 tokens.
The AI model leverages a Sparse Mixture of Experts (SMoE): multiple specialized sub-networks (i.e., “experts”) that tackle specific parts of a user’s query to improve the efficiency and performance of AI models.
Popular conversational chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT partially rely on “completion models” for core text generation. The main drawback is that they don’t work well with empty contexts.
Mixtral 8x22B is an “autocomplete model” that predicts the rest of a user’s input to speed up data entry and reduce errors.
