On Friday, Vox reported that OpenAI employees who wanted to leave the startup were confronted with expansive and restrictive exit documents.

Key Details:
  • These exit documents contained a non-disparagement clause to prevent employees from criticizing OpenAI after departing the startup.

  • If they refused to sign the exit documents, OpenAI threatened to take away their vested equity in the startup, potentially losing millions of dollars.

  • OpenAI recently completed a deal with venture firm Thrive Capital that values the startup at $80 billion, nearly tripling OpenAIā€™s valuation in less than 12 months.

  • Like Silicon Valley startups, OpenAI employees receive most of their expected compensation in equity. Once the equity has ā€œvestedā€ based on the schedule in their employment contracts, theyā€™re entitled to that portion of the equity.

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X: ā€œThere was a provision about potential equity cancellation in our previous exit documents. It shouldnā€™t have been something we had in our documents or communications. I didnā€™t know this was happening, and I shouldā€™ve.ā€

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • Despite OpenAI executives claiming they were unaware of the non-disparagement clause, exit documents with signatures from OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap and OpenAI CSO Jason Kwon state: ā€œIf you have any vested Unitsā€¦youā€™re required to sign a release of claims agreement within 60 days to retain such Units.ā€

  • Now we know why former OpenAI employees remained quiet and posted positive messages across social media after being laid off or quitting.

APPLE

šŸŽAppleā€™s WWDC24 AI Leaks

Image Source: Popular Mechanics/ā€How To Build Tomorrowā€

Apple plans to unveil several AI-enabled features during the companyā€™s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24) in June, including Project Greymatter and AI integrations for iOS 18 and MacOS 15.

Key Details:
  • Project Greymatter will merge AI add-ons into core iOS 18 functionalities and apps (e.g., Safari, Photos, and Notes) to automate tasks like texting friends, calling relatives, adding calendar invites, or creating to-do lists.

  • Apple will roll out GenAI emojis, allowing users to create custom emojis on the fly.

  • An AI-enabled ā€œSmart Recapsā€ feature will generate summaries of missed notifications, lengthy text messages, and other forms of media.

  • Appleā€™s Reference Resolution as Language Modeling (ReALM) converts on-device screen information into text inputs, bypassing bulky image recognition parameters when processing user requests.

  • Siri struggles to understand references in conversations. For example, if an iPhone user asks Siri, ā€œCall the restaurant I visited last week,ā€ the digital assistant struggles to recall the restaurant.

  • ReALM solves this issue by converting all contextual information into text, including open apps (e.g., iMessage or Apple Maps), empowering Siri to understand references.

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • ReALM addresses Siriā€™s limitation of understanding context, improving the virtual assistantā€™s ability to respond to voice commands and offer tailored advice for specific situations.

  • The iOS 18 and MacOS 15 operating systems will include software applications that determine whether an AI task should be handled on the device or via the cloud to achieve optimal computing efficiency.

šŸ—£Cohereā€™s New Multilingual LLMs

Cohere For AI unveiled Aya 23, a new family of state-of-the-art multilingual Large Language Models (LLMs) that support 23 different languages.

Aya 23 is an open-source science movement with over 3,000 collaborators worldwide. Its goal is to build the most expansive multilingual instruction fine-tuning dataset.

Aya 23 focuses on depth with an advanced 35 billion parameter model based on the ā€œCommand-Rā€ architecture.

ā€œCommand-Rā€ is a GenAI model optimized for long context tasks, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): a new AI framework that combines LLMs with external knowledge bases to improve the accuracy of AI model responses.
