🗑️OpenAI Is Storing Deleted ChatGPT Conversations
OpenAI has been ordered to preserve all ChatGPT conversations indefinitely, including the ones you thought you “deleted.”
Key Details:
It’s part of an ongoing lawsuit between OpenAI and The New York Times (NYT), in which The Times is accusing OpenAI of leveraging millions of copyrighted articles without payment or permission to train ChatGPT.
Earlier this year, OpenAI agreed to provide Virtual Machines (VMs) for The Times to conduct searches for copyrighted content. A VM is a digitized version of a physical computer.
The Times claims they spent over 150 hours searching the VMs and discovered that OpenAI erased all the training datasets stored on one of them.
Now, OpenAI has been ordered to preserve all ChatGPT conversations indefinitely, and they’re not happy about it, highlighting that it violates the privacy of millions of ChatGPT users.
Why It’s Important:
This situation has sparked debates around “AI Privilege,” the idea that talking to a conversational chatbot should be as confidential as talking to your lawyer, doctor, or therapist.

AI advancements aren’t only forcing humans to “rethink” their purpose but also pressuring established institutions to redefine their core functions.
Key Details:
As AI advancements reshape how we develop thoughts, form judgments, and work together, established institutions like schools, governments, and corporations are being forced to “rethink” what role they play in society.
In other words, established institutions are rediscovering what makes them essential in a world where machines can increasingly think, decide, and produce. How do professors teach students? How do governments lead countries? How do corporations create value?
92% of higher education students reported using AI-powered tools in some form, a significant increase from 66% in 2024.
51% of federal, state, and local governments are leveraging AI-powered tools every day to improve their compliance processes.
97% of business leaders (e.g., CEOs, CFOs, COOs, etc.) believe AI advancements will transform core business models.
Why It’s Important:
Many established institutions are beginning to adapt to “the age of AI,” but they remain constrained by outdated practices established over decades of operation.
For example, large banks like JPMorgan Chase & Co. still rely on outdated Windows operating systems to support their legacy software and hardware.
