OpenAI previewed Voice Engine, an AI model that leverages text inputs and a single 15-second audio sample to generate natural-sounding speech.

Key Details:
  • The AI model preserves the original speaker’s accent, emotions, and pitch in the generated speech.

  • OpenAI is taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due ā€œto the potential for synthetic voice misuse.ā€ So, Voice Engine is being tested by a small group of trusted partners, including AI startup HeyGen.

  • OpenAI has implemented safety measures such as watermarking to trace the origin of audio generated by Voice Engine.

  • The startup revealed that it first developed Voice Engine in late 2020 to power the voice library available in the text-to-speech API as well as the ChatGPT Voice and Read Aloud feature.

Why It’s Important:
  • Voice Engine’s early applications involve providing reading assistance to non-readers and children, translating content to reach global communities, and supporting non-verbal patients.

  • OpenAI’s new AI model also poses security threats to established authentication systems, such as voice authentication for banks and financial services. It’s crucial to outline the potential drawbacks of voice-based GenAI applications and prepare institutions to combat phishing scams utilizing this immersive technology.

🤯OpenAI’s ChatGPT Doesn’t Require an Account?!

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the startup’s flagship conversational chatbot, is now accessible to everyone without requiring users to make an account.

Key Details:
  • In a blog post, OpenAI explained: ā€œMore than 100 million people across 185 countries use ChatGPT weekly to learn something new, find creative inspiration, and get answers to their questions.ā€

  • Website visitors no longer need to log in to OpenAI to access ChatGPT. Instead, they’re dropped right into a conversation with ChatGPT.

  • However, these website visitors aren’t given access to the same set of features as account owners:

    1. Save or Share Chats

    2. Use Custom Instructions

    3. Access New Features and Improvements

  • This extra-free version of ChatGPT will have ā€œslightly more restrictive content policies.ā€

Why It’s Important:
  • Even the refined, low-lift GPT-3.5 inference system is expensive, requiring power and server space. So, website visitors might exploit OpenAI’s resources for personal benefit.

  • This decision enhances OpenAI’s data collection funnel by attracting more users to gather more data, improving ChatGPT’s capabilities by making it more informative and comprehensive in future iterations.

AI RESEARCH

šŸ“ŠDatabricks State-Of-The-Art Open LLM

Databricks introduced DBRX, an open-source Large Language Model (LLM) with advanced language and code understanding capabilities.

DBRX outperforms major open-source AI models, including Mistral’s Mixtral Mixture-of-Experts (MoE), Meta’s Llama-2, and xAI’s Grok-1, in language understanding, programming, and math.

DBRX’s inference, which is trained to process and draw conclusions from new data, is 2X faster than Meta’s Llama 2 and 40% smaller than xAI’s Grok-1 in total and active parameter counts.

The open-source LLM surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 Turbo on long-context tasks and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), a technique for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of generative AI models with facts fetched from external sources.
