🎁OpenAI’s 12 Days of “Shipmas”

During an interview at the 2024 NYT DealBook Summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a “12 Days of OpenAI” event starting today at 10:00 AM (PST).
Key Details:
Altman described his situation with Tech billionaire Elon Musk as “tremendously sad.” He doesn’t believe Musk will use his new political power to impair AI competitors.
He also announced that ChatGPT has over 300 million weekly active users, with 1 billion user queries crafted every day.
The “12 Days of OpenAI” event will involve 12 livestreams across 12 days of “a bunch of new things, big and small.”
Here’re three new features to look out for:
Sora Launch: a text-to-video AI model that converts text prompts into hyperrealistic short films.
AI-Powered Device: Legendary Apple designer Jony Ive has been designing AI-powered devices for OpenAI that’ll “create less socially disruptive experiences.”
ChatGPT’s “Live Camera”: Allows ChatGPT to process real-time video from a device’s camera. For example, you can point your device’s camera at a plant in a garden. ChatGPT will analyze the plant’s leaf shape, flower color, and stem structure.
Why It’s Important:
Altman has stated that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will arrive “a lot sooner than anyone expects,” with the first glimpses coming in 2025. The “12 Days of OpenAI” event could set the stage for that.
OpenAI Japan unveiled “GPT-Next,” a timeline of OpenAI’s progress. It outlined OpenAI’s focus on using the Self-Taught Reasoner (STaR) framework to enable AI models to self-generate training data and continuously improve their intelligence level.

🌂Google DeepMind’s “GenCast” Predicts Weather Forecasts

Image Source: Google DeepMind/“Probabilistic Weather Forecasting With Machine Learning (ML)”/Screenshot
Google DeepMind introduced “GenCast,” a new AI model that predicts weather forecasts up to 15 days in advance.
Key Details:
The new AI model’s training data contains vast amounts of historical weather data, including humidity, pressure, and temperature.
“GenCast” relies on Diffusion Models, which add “noise” (i.e., random information) to the training data and then remove it to create high-quality patterns.
These high-quality patterns enable “GenCast” to generate the likelihood of different weather outcomes, such as the probability of sunny, rainy, windy, stormy, or cloudy weather.
Why It’s Important:
This breakthrough in weather forecasting could significantly improve energy planning, disaster preparedness, and agriculture management.
Weather impacts all of us, shaping our decisions, safety, and way of life. Yet, perfect weather forecasts aren’t possible. “GenCast” allows scientists to examine Probabilistic Ensemble Weather Forecasts instead of relying on a single weather forecast.
AI INVESTMENTS
🤯Meta’s $10 Billion Data Center Project

Meta plans to invest $10 billion to set up a data center at Richland Parish in Louisiana to power AI workloads. It’ll spread across a 2,250-acre site, making it Meta’s largest data center worldwide.
Meta also seeks proposals to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) because they’re a safe, clean, and affordable energy solution to power the company’s AI models. SMRs are smaller, more efficient nuclear reactors designed to be built in factories and shipped to operational sites for installation.
Recent AI-driven power demands are leading Tech Giants to seek nuclear energy solutions, but why? AI models require immense computational resources (e.g., memory and processing power), which translates to massive energy consumption. By 2027, new data centers could require 500 terawatt-hours (TWh), or 46 million households, worth of electricity.
Nuclear power is a stable, cost-effective energy source offering continuous energy output. This reliability is crucial for data centers that can’t afford interruptions when running AI workloads.
