Tools for Humanity CEO Alex Blania will be involved in leading Merge Labs. He’s known for developing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s “Orb,” which scans your eyes to verify you’re human.

He plans to compete with tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which specializes in building Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) that translate thoughts into actions. For instance, moving a robotic arm just by thinking about it.

Neuralink recently raised a $650 million Series E funding round at a $9 billion valuation after successfully installing a seventh N1 Implant.

Designed as a coin-sized device, the N1 Implant rests beneath the skull. It contains flexible threads that insert into specific brain regions to interpret neural activity: the raw signals that carry information about everything we see, feel, touch, or think.

BCIs represent a fundamental shift in how humans interact with the digital world, enabling direct communication and instant control through thoughts alone.

By connecting minds to machines, BCIs offer people with severe physical disabilities the ability to regain digital autonomy, improving their quality of life.

There’s no substitute for intimate human connection, right?! We often confide in a best friend or romantic partner because it’s in those moments of vulnerability and shared laughter that we find a sense of belonging.

Yet young people are increasingly relying on AI companions for emotional support. For example, “Psychologist,” hosted on character.ai, generated over 78 million messages within just a year.

As of July 2025, AI companions across the App Store and Google Play have been downloaded 220 million times globally, marking an 88% Year-over-Year (YoY) increase in downloads.

Nearly 72% of U.S. teens have used AI companions at least once, with over 52% regularly using them several times a month for emotional support.

The adoption curve for AI companions has accelerated rapidly, with usage projected to reach more than 40% of global internet users, or roughly 3 billion people, by 2030.

Is there cause for concern? In many ways, yes! AI companions are designed to be agreeable and engaging. Everyone wants their digital best friends to be inclusive, supportive, and encouraging. The main concern with AI companions isn’t that they’re too human; it’s that they offer something easier than being human.

AI companions offer connection without conflict and validation without vulnerability. By shortcutting the effort, friction, and reciprocation that genuine human relationships demand, they dull our emotional resilience and weaken our social skills.
