OpenAI announced a new Child Safety Team to ensure OpenAI’s technologies aren’t misused or abused in ways harmful to underage populations.
Key Details:
The team communicates with legal groups within OpenAI as well as outside partners to make sure “processes, incidents, and reviews” involving underage users align with platform policies.
OpenAI is hiring Child Safety Enforcement Specialists to review the context of AI-generated content and ensure moderation operations run smoothly.
OpenAI recently partnered with Common Sense Media to form kid-friendly AI guidelines.
Why It’s Important:
A poll from the Center for Democracy and Technology reveals that 29% of kids report leveraging OpenAI’s ChatGPT to deal with anxiety or mental issues.
Teenagers increasingly rely on GenAI tools to expedite homework and streamline writing assignments.
Parents and academic institutions fear that plagiarism and misinformation jeopardize the integrity of learning and childhood development.

🏷Meta Labels AI-Generated Content

Meta published a blog outlining current technical efforts to identify AI content, including video and audio.
Key Details:
The social media giant has been working with industry partners to align on common technical standards that “signal when a piece of content has been created using AI.”
Meta plans to label AI-generated images that users post on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
Meta is also adding disclosure requirements for realistic images, videos, and audio posts, with potential penalties for violations.
Why It’s Important:
Meta’s building industry-leading tools to identify invisible marks at scale through metadata (i.e., a digitally signed and tamper-evident data structure).
Soon, Meta will be able to label images from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock as they apply metadata to images created by their AI models.

📜AI Algorithms Translate Ancient Text
Former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman hosted the Vesuvius Challenge, a $1 million contest to develop AI algorithms that identify and extract Greek letters from damaged scrolls.
A group of students translated a charred 2,000-year-old scroll buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The 2000-year-old scroll discussed music, food, and how to enjoy life’s pleasures.
