🎙Anthropic CEO Spends Five Hours on Lex Fridman’s Podcast

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei spent five hours on Lex Fridman’s podcast discussing the limits of scaling AI models and a realistic timeline for achieving superintelligence. You read that right, five hours?! So, let’s break down the main points.
Key Details:
Amodei believes “scaling up” AI models is still a viable path toward achieving more capable AI applications.
He clarifies that “scaling up” refers to increasing the amount of computing power used to train AI models while also increasing the size of training datasets.
Amodei doesn’t believe that current dataset shortages will halt AI developments. Instead, developers will “get around” data limitations by generating high-quality synthetic data (i.e., artificially created information) to continue training AI models.
Amodei was also transparent about how AI models are unpredictable in nature. “There’s this whack-a-mole aspect, where you push on this one thing, and these other things start to move.”
Amodei anticipates that AI models will reach superintelligence by 2027, exceeding “human-level” performance on a number of tasks. “We’re rapidly running out of truly convincing blockers, truly compelling reasons why this won’t happen in the next few years.”

📽AI-Powered Surgical Robot Learns From Watching Videos

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) developed a method to train surgical robots by showing them videos of seasoned surgeons.
Key Details:
This method involves leveraging Imitation Learning, which eliminates the need to program surgical robots with each individual move required during a medical procedure.
In other words, Imitation Learning brings the field of robotic surgery closer to true autonomy, where surgical robots can perform complex surgeries without human intervention.
Imitation Learning is the process of observing an action and then repeating it. In this context, the surgical robot watches videos of seasoned surgeons to learn how to perform the same surgical procedures.
The Imitation Learning is paired with the same Machine Learning (ML) architecture that underpins OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
However, while ChatGPT processes words to generate text, this method speaks “robot” with Kinematics: “A language that breaks down the angles of robotic motion into math.”
Why It’s Important:
This method was used to train the “da Vinci Surgical System” to perform three fundamental tasks required in surgical procedures:
Suturing (i.e., “Stiches”)
Lifting Body Tissue
Manipulating a Needle

OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch “Operator,” an AI Agent that controls your browser tabs to complete complex tasks like ordering food from a restaurant’s website.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on the r/ChatGPT Reddit, “We’ll have better and better AI models, but I feel like the next giant breakthrough will be AI agents.”
Anthropic also recently unveiled “Computer Use,” which enables Anthropic’s Claude (i.e., a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT) to navigate your computer autonomously. “It can use computers in basically the same way we do,” said Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s Chief Science Officer (CSO).
