Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s multi-trillion-dollar humanoid robot vision faces a new threat: “OpenAI Robotics,” which triggered a 4.57% drop in Tesla’s stock.

Key details:
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced “OpenAI Robotics,” which is dedicated to designing, developing, and deploying general-purpose robots that support skilled workers in constructing essential industrial infrastructure like factories, warehouses, power grids, and data centers.

  • OpenAI’s robotics research initiatives began way before the inception of ChatGPT. For example, OpenAI famously trained a robotic hand named “Dactyl” to solve a Rubik’s Cube 8 years ago. In other words, this announcement revives an earlier ambition that was shelved after language models became OpenAI’s defining product.

  • OpenAI also added two new job listings: 1. Actuator Design Engineer: building the “muscles” and “joints” for robots to unlock lifelike movements, and 2. DAQ Station Engineer: embedding an intelligent sensor suite that serves as the “central nervous system” for robots to “perceive” and “interact” with the physical world.

Key takeaways:
  • MS&Co estimates the humanoid robot market will likely reach $5 trillion by 2050. In other words, there could be well over 1 billion humanoid robots in use within the next 25 years. Instead of just licensing language models, OpenAI’s betting on the “brain + body + behavior” robotics stack required to achieve true Embodied AGI: machines that can perceive, reason, and act in the physical world.

  • Tesla’s stock fell 4.57% to $415.88 per share following the news of OpenAI’s new robotics reboot. It’s all because Tesla’s long-term market valuation heavily depends on Tesla Optimus ultimately being worth more than the self-driving car business, even retrofitting the Fremont factory line, which ceased Model S and Model X production, to assemble up to 1 million humanoid robots annually in the near future.

AI & THE JOB MARKET

📊 Big Tech CEOs Blame AI for Layoffs

The latest U.S. private employment data suggests AI isn’t the ultimate job killer. Instead, it’s the ultimate job re-skiller that’s creating more work with better wages.

Key details:
  • According to Torsten SlĂžk, partner and chief economist at APG, the most recent U.S. labor data reveals “zero evidence of AI-related job losses.” More specifically, he cited the ADP National Employment Report, which analyzes weekly payroll data from more than 26 million U.S. employees to track changes in U.S. private employment.

  • Last month, U.S. private employment increased by 109,000 jobs, with annual pay for “job-stayers” up 4.4% and annual pay for “job-changers” up 6.6% from the prior year. It’s the best month for U.S. job growth since January 2025. In other words, the U.S. labor market is adding more jobs with higher wages. This directly contradicts the narrative that AI drives mass job loss. So, what’s going on?

  • Big Tech companies have defaulted to “AI-washing,” rebranding layoffs from post-pandemic overstaffing as a strategic AI agenda to satisfy investors and boost stock prices. According to CGC, 1,206,374 layoffs were announced in 2025. Of those, only 54,836, or about 4.5%, were explicitly attributed to AI.

Key takeaways:
  • In an interview with 1,000 executives, 98% anticipate “near-term organizational design changes over the next two years.” According to BCG, 50% to 55% of job roles in the U.S. will be reshaped by AI within the next three years, while 10% to 15% could be eliminated within the next five years. In other words, AI will reshape more than it replaces in the near future.

  • The UR sits at 4.3%, comfortably below the 50-year average of 6.1%. So, why does the U.S. job market seem so bad right now? It’s mainly because of the entry-level recruitment squeeze, with a reported 11% decline in entry-level hiring over the past 18 months. So, while the overall U.S. labor market is adding more jobs with higher wages, 20- to 24-year-olds face a much tighter early career pathway.
