🗣OpenAI’s “Sky” Voice Lawsuit With Scarlett Johansson?

During OpenAI’s Spring Update, the startup unveiled a new AI model called GPT-4o that generates speech with emotional nuances eerily similar to Scarlett Johansson.

Key Details:

  • GPT-4o (”o” for “omni”) is a new AI model that can reason across audio, vision, and text to provide more natural human-computer interaction.

  • During the Spring Update, GPT-4o used the “Sky” voice to answer user queries in a conversational and witty way.

  • Media members immediately compared “Sky” to Scarlett Johansson’s AI companion character in the 2013 romantic drama film Her.

  • Right after the Spring Update, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X: “Her.”

  • OpenAI published an article stating: “Sky’s voice isn’t an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her natural speaking voice.”

  • Altman initially approached Johansson about GPT-4o because “he felt that by my voicing the system, I could bridge the gap between technology companies and creatives.” She declined the offer.

  • Johansson released a statement accusing OpenAI of copying her voice without her consent, claiming she was “shocked” and “angered.”

Why It’s Important:

  • OpenAI has temporarily paused the use of “Sky.” The startup could claim AI models fall under transformative use (i.e., add new expression, meaning, or messaging to the original work) and bypass copyright law.

  • Using AI to replicate an artist’s voice without their permission can lead to copyright infringement and legal action.

Microsoft introduced a new category of Windows PCs designed for AI called “Copilot + PCs.”

Key Details:

  • Copilot in Windows is a sidebar overlay that helps users execute PC-specific tasks, including opening apps, toggling dark mode, turning on Bluetooth, and performing screenshots.

  • Microsoft’s AI Copilot resembles OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It creates human-like text, composes emails, answers questions, and performs actions in Windows.
