🪦OpenAI’s Superalignment Team is Super Dead

OpenAI has disbanded its Superalignment Team, which was focused on developing ways to govern, steer, and reduce the long-term risks of “superintelligent” AI models.

Key Details:

• The Superalignment Team was built to address the question: “How do we ensure AI systems much smarter than humans follow human intent?”

• OpenAI initially dedicated 20% of computing power to managing the security, safety, monitoring, preparedness, and social impact of “superintelligent” AI models. However, OpenAI slowly redirected computational resources supplied to the Superalignment Team for AI projects.

• In November 2023, when OpenAI’s Board of Directors fired OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to ensure AI models were scaled responsibly, he clawed his way back to power and replaced the board members who fired him.

• Over the past few months, OpenAI has been losing safety-conscious employees left and right, including OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

• OpenAI is known for employees signing offboarding agreements with non-disparagement provisions when leaving the startup. If an employee refuses to sign it, they give up their equity.

Why It’s Important:

• After resigning as co-leader of the Superalignment Team, Jan Leike posted on X: “Safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.”

• In 2019, OpenAI transitioned from a non-profit model to a “capped profit” framework called OpenAI LP to “raise investment capital and attract employees with startup-like equity.”

• Recent events suggest that OpenAI favors the for-profit subsidiary over its non-profit purpose of exploring how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could benefit humanity.

• Elon Musk’s lawsuit alleges that OpenAI “set the founding agreement aflame” in 2023 by transforming into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

Apple announced several new accessibility features coming to iOS 18, including AI-powered Eye Tracking, Music Haptics, and Vocal Shortcuts.

Key Details:

• Eye Tracking offers users a built-in option for navigating the iPad and iPhone with just their eyes.

• Eye Tracking leverages the front-facing camera to set up and calibrate this feature in seconds with an on-device AI algorithm.

• Apple is rumored to license OpenAI’s engine to add GenAI features to Apple’s ecosystem or incorporate the startup’s AI models into Apple’s iOS 18 update.

• In June, Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will unveil the company’s comprehensive AI strategy for iOS 18 to provide proactive features that assist users in their daily lives.

🔬GenAI Classifies Phase Transitions in Materials

MIT researchers and the University of Basel in Switzerland developed an AI framework that classifies phase transitions in materials or physical systems.

When water (H2O) freezes, it transitions from a liquid phase to a solid phase, resulting in property changes in density and volume.

In novel materials or complex physical systems, phase transitions (e.g., solids, liquids, and gases) are essential in physics to develop ultra-strong and lightweight materials that support quantum computing.

Ultimately, this AI framework could allow scientists to discover unknown phases of matter autonomously, eliminating the laborious, manual techniques that rely on theoretical expertise.
