OpenAI is reportedly restructuring into a For-Profit Benefit Corporation (“B Corp.”) that will no longer be controlled by a non-profit Board of Directors (BofD).
Key Details:
As OpenAI is reportedly restructuring into a “B Corp.,” several top executives have announced their departure at once:
Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati is stepping away to “create the time and space to do my own exploration.”
Chief Research Officer (CRO) Bob McGrew announced his exit by saying, “I’ve truly enjoyed working alongside an entire company of brilliant, committed individuals.”
Vice President (VP) of Post-Training Research Barret Zoph left because “right now feels like a natural point for me to explore new opportunities outside of OpenAI.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman would award himself a 7% equity stake in the company.
At OpenAI’s current valuation of $150 billion, that would be $10.5 billion in shares.
During Altman’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, he stated, “I have no equity in OpenAI. I’m doing this because I love it!”
Altman posted on X: “Mira, Bob, and Barret made these decisions independently of each other.”
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise $6.5 billion at a $150 billion Pre-Money Valuation (i.e., estimated value of a company before it receives new money from investors).
However, the deal is contingent on OpenAI removing the startup’s non-profit “capped profit” framework, which puts a ceiling on the profit investors can earn from OpenAI.

🫐Meta Reveals New Orion ARxAI Smart Glasses and More

At the Meta Connect 2024 Conference, Meta revealed several new AI-powered offerings, including Orion ARxAI Smart Glasses, Meta’s Llama 3.2, and Voice Mode for Meta AI.
Key Details:
The Orion ARxAI Smart Glasses leverage Augmented Reality (AR) to offer interactive experiences that overlay computer-generated content into the real world.
They’re equipped with fluid voice controls, eye tracking, and hand tracking, as well as paired with a Neural Wristband.
The Neural Wristband uses Electromyography (EMG) to detect and interpret the electrical signals produced by muscles, translating hand movements into digital commands.
“It’s the first device that’s powered by our wrist-based neural interface,” explained Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Meta’s Llama 3.2 is a powerful AI model trained on massive amounts of text data to generate more coherent, informative, and creative outputs on edge devices (e.g., smartphones or laptops).
Voice Mode allows you to use your voice to interact with Meta AI (i.e., Meta’s AI-powered virtual assistant) on Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

🔬AI Repurposes Existing Drugs to Treat Rare Diseases
Image Source: Eric Vance/PICRYL/“U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)”
There are more than 7,000 rare diseases and undiagnosed illnesses globally. Although each condition occurs in a small number of individuals, they collectively affect over 300 million people worldwide.
Harvard Medical School created “TxGNN,” an AI model that identifies existing drugs that can be repurposed to treat rare diseases and undiagnosed illnesses.
“TxGNN” identified drug candidates from nearly 8,000 existing medicines for 17,080 rare diseases without existing treatments.
Compared to leading AI frameworks for drug repurposing, “TxGNN” was approximately 50% better, on average, at identifying drug candidates.
It was also 35% more accurate in predicting what drugs would have contraindications (i.e., medical symptoms that make treatments inadvisable because they could harm patients).
