💵OpenAI Shifts to Profit-Driven Startup Structure?!

OpenAI will likely shift to a profit-driven startup structure by the start of next year.

Key Details:
  • OpenAI is reportedly in talks with investors to raise $6.5 billion at a $150 billion Pre-Money Valuation.

  • Pre-Money Valuation is the estimated value of a startup before it receives new money from investors.

  • However, the deal is contingent on OpenAI removing the startup’s “capped profit” framework, which puts a ceiling on the profit investors can earn from OpenAI.

  • In 2019, OpenAI shifted from a nonprofit entity to a “capped profit” framework called OpenAI LP to raise capital in pursuit of its mission.

  • This “capped profit” framework provides investors and employees a capped return if the startup succeeds, allowing OpenAI to “raise investment capital and attract employees with startup-like equity.”

  • However, any returns beyond what OpenAI owes investors and employees of OpenAI LP are funneled into the original nonprofit entity.

Why It’s Important:
  • OpenAI’s current nonprofit entity, paired with a “capped profit” framework, seems to frustrate investors.

  • “The nonprofit entity is core to our mission and will continue to exist,” said an OpenAI spokesperson. However, investing in further AI development isn’t cheap.

THE WHITE HOUSE

🏛The White House Launches New AI Datacenter Task Force

The White House launched a new AI Datacenter Task Force to promote policies that advance datacenter developments for AI projects.

Key Details:
  • Big Tech executives from Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Microsoft met with government officials to discuss computing power requirements, datacenter capacity constraints, and job creation methods.

  • The new Task Force will advance datacenter development operations in line with economic, national security, and environmental goals.

  • For example, the Department of Energy (DOE) will offer various resources, including loans, grants, tax credits, and technical assistance, to help datacenter operators secure clean energy solutions.

  • Big Tech executives also reaffirmed their commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions and pursuing clean energy to power their operations.

Why It’s Important:
  • Given how quickly AI developments are accelerating, it’s not surprising it’s turned into a political issue among Democrats and Republicans.

  • President Joe Biden’s cabinet supports a slower, safety-focused approach that involves expansive government oversight, industry regulations, and monitoring unlawful discrimination to fuel antitrust actions.

  • Former President Donald Trump’s camp favors looser regulations to prevent stifling the American economy’s growth engine. They vocally support open-source AI projects (i.e., the public release of underlying code that can be copied and altered to create new offerings).

🔬AI Helps Doctors Annotate Medical Scans

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) developed “ScribblePrompt,” an AI system that streamlines Medical Image Segmentation.

Medical Image Segmentation involves dividing a medical image into multiple segments, where each segment highlights specific details in the medical image to diagnose conditions and offer treatment plans.

Instead of having doctors mark up each medical image manually, “ScribblePrompt” efficiently focuses on the more interesting parts of medical images instantly.

“Scribble Prompt’s” interface allows doctors to scribble across the rough area they’d like segmented, and the AI system will highlight the entire structure as requested.

For example, suppose a radiologist is examining a medical image of a patient suspected of having pneumonia. In that case, the radiologist simply scribbles a few lines around a suspicious area on the medical image. Then, “Scribble Prompt” instantly divides the medical image into multiple segments, highlighting the entire lung, heart, and potential pneumonia region.

“Scribble Prompt” was trained on simulated scribbles and clicks on 54,000 images across 65 datasets, featuring scans of the eyes, spine, cells, skin, muscles, neck, brain, bones, teeth, and lesions.
