Internal documents obtained by 404 Media, an independent media company, show Tumblr and WordPress compiling user data from private posts and public blogs for OpenAI to train AI models.

Key Details:

• Automattic, the parent company of Tumblr and WordPress, scraped content from 2014 to 2023, resulting in a messy and controversial initial data dump.

• The initial data dump accidentally included private posts on public blogs, posts on deleted or suspended blogs, and posts marked as “Explicit,” “NSFW,” or “Mature.”

• Automattic plans to launch a new setting that allows “users to opt-out of data sharing with third parties, including AI companies.”

Why It’s Important:

• As community platforms shift revenue models from advertisements to data-sharing for companies to train AI models, users are raising concerns about data exposure, lack of consent, and fair compensation.

• Recently, Reddit struck a $60 million yearly deal with Google to sell user data. Reddit users argue the platform is made from code and algorithms, but it’s built and managed by users.

🧯Google CEO Tells Employees Gemini Mistakes Are “Unacceptable”

Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the company’s Gemini controversy as “unacceptable,” vowing to implement structural changes to fix the problem.

Key Details:

• Google suspended its Gemini image generation tool last week after users noticed it refused to depict historically accurate results of Vikings, Nazis, and the Pope.

• Instead, the tool prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) by generating Asian Nazis and Black Vikings.

• The controversy spiraled when Gemini was found to generate text responses equating Elon Musk’s influence on society with that of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime.

• Pichai explained: “I know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias. To be clear, that’s completely unacceptable, and we got it wrong.”

Why It’s Important:

• Most companies offering AI tools develop guardrails to mitigate abuses, avoid bias, and streamline user-friendliness. However, fixing biases in language models is difficult because “we don’t really understand how they generate the things they do.”

• Pichai claims the company has already made progress in fixing Gemini’s guardrails by filtering the information involved in the training process.

MIT researchers built a deep-learning model that encodes essential information about modern warehouses, including robots, planned paths, tasks, and obstacles, to decongest areas of the warehouse and improve overall efficiency.

Cathy Wi, the Gilbert W. Winslow Career Development Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), explained: “It encodes hundreds of robots in terms of their trajectories, origins, destinations, and relationships with other robots.”
