OpenAI just announced a new partnership to help America’s leading scientists drive scientific breakthroughs.

Key Details:
  • 15,000 scientists will leverage Reasoning Engines like “OpenAI o3” to better understand the forces that govern the universe.

  • The U.S. National Laboratories will be able to foster meaningful improvements in energy sectors, like updating America’s aging power grid or developing nuclear weapons for national security.

  • This new partnership follows OpenAI’s recent release of “ChatGPT Gov,” which enables the U.S. government to more easily manage security, privacy, and compliance requirements.

Why It’s Important:
  • Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone joined OpenAI’s Board of Directors (BofD) last year. At the time, it seemed like a random choice.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) discovered “Indoor-Training Effect,” a phenomenon where AI Agents trained in a pristine environment perform better in real-world settings.

Key Details:
  • Is it better to train for a tennis tournament on a pristine indoor tennis court or at a noisy outdoor tennis court?

  • If we train for a tennis tournament on a pristine indoor tennis court, we can focus on mastering the serve, forehand, or backhand. But, if we move to a noisy outdoor tennis court, factors like wind could impact us.

  • “We’d have a higher probability of mastering tennis if we start on a pristine indoor tennis court,” said Lead Researcher Serena Bono.

  • To test this theory, they created a pristine environment and slowly added controlled amounts of “noise” to it, making “δ-environments.”

  • AI Agents trained in a pristine environment performed better when tested in “δ-environments” than AI Agents trained directly in those “δ-environments.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Instead of trying to match the training environments with real-world settings, developers may be able to construct pristine environments where AI Agents can learn even better.

  • Indoor-Training Effect” aims to improve Reinforcement Learning (RL), which mimics the “trial-and-error” process humans use to learn, where decisions that lead to desired outcomes are reinforced.

🔍OpenAI Says “DeepSeek-R1” Was Trained Using Their AI Models

Co-Founder and Partner at Craft Ventures David Sacks said there’s “substantial evidence” that Chinese AI Labs “distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI’s AI models” to train “DeepSeek-R1” and he doesn’t think “OpenAI is very happy about this.”

“There’s a technique in AI called distillation, which you’re going to hear a lot about, and it’s when one AI model learns from another AI model,” he said. “What happens is the student AI model asks the parent AI model millions of questions to mimic the reasoning process of the parent AI model.”
