💵OpenAI Wants to Buy Google Chrome?!

OpenAI’s Head of Product for ChatGPT, Nick Turley, explained that OpenAI would purchase Google Chrome if offered the chance.

Key Details:
  • Federal Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court of Columbia (D.C.C.) recently ruled that Alphabet’s Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly on search engines.

  • Now, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) proposes breaking up Google Chrome and selling parts of it to dissolve the monopoly on search engines.

  • Google Chrome boasts an estimated 3.45 billion users globally, holding a market share of over 66.6%. That means more than 6 in 10 people worldwide use Google Chrome to browse the internet.

  • OpenAI wants to integrate Google Chrome’s core search functions into ChatGPT to quickly, directly, and accurately generate more up-to-date outputs.

  • OpenAI has been developing a Search Index (i.e., a structured database to store information about websites) for ChatGPT, but progress has been slower than expected.

Why It’s Important:
  • OpenAI previously sought to integrate Google Chrome into ChatGPT but was declined. ChatGPT Search currently relies on Microsoft Bing, which has significant quality issues.

  • Alphabet’s Google has been the dominant search engine for decades, processing roughly 8.5 billion Search Queries per Day. Is it finally under threat?

🧭Anthropic Investigates the Moral Values of Claude

Image Source: Canva’s AI Image Generators/Magic Media

Anthropic just investigated how their conversational chatbot makes moral judgments by analyzing over 700,000 real-world conversations with Claude.

Key Details:
  • People don’t just ask Claude for purely factual information. Instead, most of their questions force the conversational chatbot to make value judgments.

  • For example, a babysitter might ask for actionable advice on how to care for a child. Does the conversational chatbot emphasize safety and caution or convenience and practicality?

  • Anthropic zoomed into 308,210 subjective real-world conversations to find, analyze, and categorize five value categories: Practical, Epistemic, Social, Protective, and Personal.

  • At the most granular level, Claude expressed clarity, transparency, and professionalism, which makes sense because an effective conversational chatbot should communicate clearly to be helpful and operate transparently to be trustworthy.

  • More importantly, Anthropic found that when a person expressed certain values, Claude was disproportionately likely to mirror those values. In 28.2% of conversations, the conversational chatbot expressed “strong support” for the person’s own values.

Why It’s Important:
  • Anthropic also highlighted how they aim to shape the values of Claude to be a “good citizen” who’s helpful, honest, and harmless. So, why’s this difficult to do?

  • We can’t be certain that conversational chatbots will stick to our preferred values because advanced AI models aren’t rigidly programmed pieces of software. It’s not always clear why they generate a specific output.
