OpenAI just achieved a perfect score at the worldās most prestigious programming competition.
Key Details:
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals involves teams of three students from nearly 3,000 universities across 103 countries competing to solve complex algorithmic problems.
OpenAI developed an experimental LRM paired with GPT-5 that correctly solved 12 out of 12 of these exceptionally challenging algorithmic problems.
It reportedly relies on three main components:
š” Large Reasoning Model (LRM) to analyze complex algorithmic problems and form ideas on how to solve them.
š“ Symbolic Deduction Engine (SDE) to apply formal logic to the LRMās ideas by rigorously checking them against algorithmic rules like āa recursive function must possess a base case.ā
š¢ Iterative Feedback Loop (IFP) to provide targeted critiques when the SDE identifies flaws in the LRMās ideas.
Why Itās Important:
If frontier AI models can solve exceptionally challenging algorithmic problems, it means theyāre doing more than just performing sophisticated pattern matching; theyāre demonstrating the ability to understand concepts, formulate strategies, and construct logical arguments.
Itās the first time in ICPC World Finals history that all the complex algorithmic problems were solved. This achievement also marks the first time a frontier AI model has displayed some form of superhuman intelligence within a specific domain.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) developed āDelphi-2M,ā which analyzes a patientās medical records to accurately predict their risk of developing over 1,000 different diseases up to 20 years in advance.
Key Details:
It was trained on 400,000 anonymized clinical datasets from UK Biobank, which contained hospital visits with detailed timelines of diagnoses since birth.
Each medical event was classified using standardized medical codes, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). For example, if a doctor diagnoses Type 2 Diabetes and prescribes Metformin to treat high blood sugar levels, thatās categorized as ICD Code E11.9.
āDelphi-2Mā leveraged these standardized medical codes to convert complex medical records into structured sequences of health events, preserving the chronological order of hospital visits, diagnoses, and treatments to analyze how a patientās health evolved over time.
As a result, it learned to simulate how diseases might progress throughout a patientās lifespan based on demographics like age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location.
Why Itās Important:
It achieved an average AUC of approximately 0.85 over a 5-year period. In other words, āDelphi-2Mā correctly distinguished between patients whoād develop a disease and those who wouldnāt 85% of the time.
It excels at predicting diseases with well-understood progression patterns such as hypertension, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. While promising, it struggles to perform well on rare diseases with irregular progressions.
