The world’s biggest record labels are reportedly pursuing licensing deals with AI firms to figure out how to compensate artists when their records are used to train “music-generating AI tools.”
Key Details:
In 2024, the “Big 3” American record labels filed lawsuits against Suno and Udio for training music generators on copyrighted records without permission or compensation.
Warner Music Group (WMG)
Universal Music Group (UMG)
Sony Music Entertainment (SME)
Now, WMG, UMG, and SME are trying to partner with Suno and Udio to ensure that artists are paid when their records are used to train “music-generating AI tools.”
These licensing deals would reportedly put an end to the lawsuits, which seek up to $150,000 per “infringed record,” resulting in billions of dollars in damages.

These strategic licensing deals signal a trend within the music industry of adopting the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” attitude toward AI.

Researchers at the University of Bern (UoB) recently discovered that AI Systems are better at recognizing and responding to emotional cues than humans.
Key Details:
Being able to communicate your emotions is crucial for developing and maintaining social bonds.
Individuals with the ability to recognize, understand, express, and respond to emotions achieve better outcomes across life domains.
For example, individuals with higher Emotional Intelligence (EI) are perceived as warmer and more competent during workplace conflicts.
As AI Systems become increasingly integrated into our everyday workflows, it’s essential that they’re not only functionally efficient but also emotionally intelligent.
They examined the ability of six AI Systems to recognize and respond to emotional cues across five standard EI Tests. Surprisingly, the six AI Systems outperformed humans across all five standard EI Tests.
OpenAI’s “OpenAI o1,” Google’s “Gemini 1.5 Flash,” and Anthropic’s “Claude 3.5 Haiku” scored an average of 81% accuracy. In comparison, humans scored an average of 56% accuracy.
Why It’s Important:
AI Systems are trained on vast amounts of high-quality datasets filled with books, articles, and conversations. These high-quality datasets are rich in emotional language and emotional reasoning.
While AI Systems can’t “feel,” they can mimic emotional understanding by recognizing data-driven patterns that underpin emotional scenarios, enabling them to predict appropriate emotional reactions better than humans.
