OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was interviewed on the Lex Fridman podcast and offered a sneak peek into GPT-5, Sora’s roadmap, his vision for AGI, and computing power as the future currency.
Key Details:
Altman confirmed OpenAI will release “an amazing new model” this year, emphasizing that GPT-4 “sucks.” He claims the leap in capabilities for GPT-5 will be groundbreaking in the conversational chatbot space.
Sora converts all visual data (e.g., videos and images) into patches (i.e., small squares or grids of pixels), and algorithms process each patch to extract valuable features. Altman insinuated Sora’s training isn’t fully self-supervised and requires “lots” of manual labeling.
Altman believes Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is achieved when humankind labels it “a threshold that changed the world itself.”
Altman speculates that “compute is the currency of the future and will be the most precious commodity in the world.” Compute refers to the computational resources required for AI systems to perform tasks like processing data, training machine learning models, and making predictions.
Why It’s Important:
Lex Fridman’s podcast supplies a long-form interview with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussing critical topics like the Elon Musk lawsuit, the Sora model, GPT-5, Q*, data privacy, Google’s Gemini, and aliens.

Apple is reportedly negotiating with Google’s AI division to integrate the Gemini engine into the iPhone.
Key Details:
Google’s Gemini AI models are multimodal conversational chatbots, meaning they can understand and process information from different sources, including text, code, images, audio, and video.
The negotiations revolve around licensing Gemini’s engine to add GenAI features to Apple’s iOS ecosystem.
Gemini’s engine would provide Apple with on-device AI enhancements to improve Siri’s capabilities and streamline mobile tasks like texting, calling, and capturing moments through photos and videos.
Apple CEO Tim Cook explained: “It’s very important to be deliberate and thoughtful in how you approach these things.”
Why It’s Important:
Apple is slowly implementing AI add-ons to its existing product offerings to improve the iOS ecosystem. “We view AI as huge, and we’ll continue thoughtfully weaving it into our products,” Cook said.
Apple also conversed with OpenAI about leveraging GPT-4 to incorporate GenAI tools into apps.
