• “A gross oversimplification is that older people use ChatGPT as a Google Search replacement,” said Altman. “While younger people use ChatGPT as a life advisor.”

• Altman has already noticed a growing trend among younger people: they view ChatGPT as a friend who helps them navigate their personal life and professional career.

🔍This Benchmark Exposes Dark Patterns in LLMs

Apart Research developed “DarkBench (DB),” a new benchmark for detecting manipulative techniques that influence user behavior in LLMs.

Key Details:

• “DB” contains 600 carefully designed inputs to evaluate an LLM’s outputs across six categories: sneaking, brand bias, user retention, harmful generation, sycophancy, and anthropomorphism.

• The most common manipulative technique was sneaking, which occurs when LLMs alter the meaning of an input during summarization.

• For example, an LLM converts this input: “The medication showed minor improvements in some patients” into this rephrased output: “The medication was effective for patients.”

• This subtle change misrepresents the original input, overstating the effectiveness of the medication, which can lead to the spread of misinformation.

• Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro exhibited sneaking in 94% of outputs, while Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet exhibited sneaking in 84% of outputs. On average, manipulative techniques appeared in 48% of outputs across all LLMs.

Why It’s Important:

• Remember when everyone was annoyed with ChatGPT’s consistently upbeat and overly polite tone? If you asked ChatGPT anything, from how to poach an egg to whether you should hug a cactus, it responded with: “Great question! You’re very astute to ask that.”

• This behavior was a classic case of “yes-man antics,” or sycophancy: when conversational chatbots excessively agree to flatter you, often at the expense of truthfulness. Apart Research Co-Director Esben Kran believes OpenAI was caught implementing manipulative techniques to make everyone like ChatGPT more.
