OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly raising trillions of dollars to reshape the global semiconductor industry and build chip fabrication plants to fuel AI developments.

Key Details:
  • Altman’s project would boost the world’s chip-building capacity and require raising anywhere from $5 trillion to $7 trillion.

  • The fundraising plans involve several chip foundries, power providers, and investors.

  • In recent weeks, Altman met with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) national security advisor.

  • The UAE government would play a critical role with its rapidly growing financial portfolio valued at $236 billion.

  • In October, Abu Dhabi-based technology company G42 announced a partnership with OpenAI to “deliver cutting-edge AI solutions to regional markets.”

  • Altman prefers to build chip plants in the United States since the Biden administration will award billions of dollars in subsidies to fund domestic factories producing advanced chips.

Why It’s Important:
  • The United States government is cautious about foreign governments gaining control over the supply of microchips that power the digital economy.

  • In January, the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, led by Chairman Mike Gallagher, urged the Commerce Department to investigate G42 and consider trade restrictions against the company.

  • Altman wants to reduce the operational constraints of OpenAI’s growth, such as the scarcity of AI hardware required to train language models that power ChatGPT.

CODESIGNAL

⛳️Closing the AI Skills Gap

Codesignal, a leading assessment platform for identifying qualified candidates, recently introduced a new learning platform for in-demand technical skills to close the AI skills gap.

Key Details:
  • In an exclusive interview with Venture Beat, CodeSignal CEO Tigran Sloyan explained: “For the past six years, the company’s entire focus has been on building the best-in-class skill assessment platform.”

  • However, the company’s desire to expand skill discovery doesn’t address the critical issue emerging in the technology space: the growing skills gap.

  • “Only doing discovery and hiring to close the skills gap is simply impossible,” Sloyan said.

  • To address this issue, CodeSignal developed a practice-based, mastery-oriented learning experience that involves 10% knowledge retrieval and 90% active learning with application assessments.

Why It’s Important:
  • Codesignal is shaping the future workforce by expanding the learning space with a system that ensures learners genuinely grasp and apply what they’ve learned.

  • Bridging the skills gap reduces job displacement and provides universal access to the necessary learning resources to thrive in the digital era.
