Skild AI emerged from stealth with a massive $300M Series A to build a “general-purpose brain” for robots.
Key Details:
Skild AI’s foundational AI model is trained on a massive dataset of real-world robotic scenarios that involve:
Manipulation: How to grasp, move, and interact with objects.
Locomotion: Movement strategies for different robot types (e.g., wheel, legs, etc.).
Navigation/Vision: Surveying the relative locations of objects to perceive surroundings.
As opposed to vertically designed robots built for specific applications, Skild AI’s foundational AI model serves as a “general-purpose brain” to make any robot thrive in multiple environments and handle complex tasks.
“We can expand the capabilities of robots, democratize their cost, and support the severely understaffed labor market,” said Abhinav Gupta, President and Co-Founder of Skild AI.

There’s a massive labor shortage in America today, with more than 1.7 million jobs available than there are unemployed workers.

💭Do We Overestimate Reasoning Skills of LLMs?
MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) conducted a study examining how Large Language Models (LLMs) perform on various unseen tasks.
The study compared “default tasks” (i.e., the common tasks an LLM is trained on) with “counterfactual scenarios” (i.e., hypothetical situations deviating from default conditions) to reveal if LLMs are memorizing patterns or deploying reasoning skills.
MIT’s CSAIL used various tailored datasets and benchmarks to assess popular AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude 3. The study uncovered significant “overfitting” on popular LLMs, reinforcing the growing concern of dataset contamination.
“Overfitting” refers to LLMs memorizing specific problems from benchmarks instead of learning general problem-solving skills to apply concepts and perform well on unseen data.
“LLMs excel in familiar scenarios, almost like a well-worn path, but struggle when the terrain gets unfamiliar,” said Zhaofeng Wu, an MIT PhD student in Electrical Engineering.
