Groq, a hardware startup delivering exceptional compute speed, partnered with Saudi Arabian Oil Group Aramco to build the world’s largest AI data center.

The AI data center will initially support over 19,000 Language Processing Units (LPUs) and potentially expand to more than 200,000 LPUs within a few years.

Groq identified that current processors, such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), can’t handle the speed and demand required to scale AI models in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner.

Unlike GPUs that do many things at once (i.e., parallel processing), LPUs work on one task after another (i.e., sequential processing), which is perfect for understanding and generating language.

Imagine LPUs as a relay race in which each runner (e.g., AI chip) passes the baton (e.g., data) to the next runner (e.g., AI chip), making everything run super fast.

The AI data center exploits Saudi Arabia’s available land, low energy costs, and proximity to 4 billion people within a 100-millisecond (ms) data travel time.
