Yum! Brands Inc. is rolling out new AI Drive-Thru Ordering lanes at hundreds of Taco Bell locations in the U.S. by the end of 2024.

Key Details:
  • The restaurant company has already implemented over 100 AI Drive-Thru Ordering lanes at Taco Bells across the U.S. to reduce labor costs and improve service speeds.

  • The AI system deploys three steps to take your order:

    1. Speech Recognition: converts your voice into text.

    2. Natural Language Processing (NLP): interprets your order to understand accents, slang, and context.

    3. Menu Database: references Taco Bell’s menu database to verify items and assign prices.

  • Yum! Brands Inc. claims the AI system outperforms humans in accuracy, reduces wait times, and decreases employee workloads.

Why It’s Important:
  • AI systems can process orders faster than humans, leading to shorter customer wait times.

  • By automating the order-taking process, Taco Bell can reduce labor costs associated with drive-thru staff.

⚔️Microsoft Lists OpenAI as a Competitor

On Tuesday, Microsoft listed OpenAI as a competitor in the company’s latest 10-K annual report.

Key Details:
  • Microsoft has a long-term relationship with OpenAI. Microsoft is OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider and uses the startup’s AI models to develop products and services for commercial clients.

  • Microsoft also obtained an observer role on OpenAI’s Board of Directors by investing $13 billion into building the startup’s research and developer teams.

  • In 2024, Microsoft’s stock achieved a $3 trillion market cap by leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 to develop Microsoft offerings.

  • Elon Musk claims OpenAI transformed into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

  • To complicate Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, the startup recently partnered with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence: a suite of AI features built into your iPhone, iPad, and MacBook.

Why It’s Important:
  • Antitrust authorities, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Justice (DOJ), continue investigating “whether investments and partnerships pursued by dominant companies risk distorting innovation and undermining fair competition.”

  • Microsoft may be trying to change the narrative around its relationship with OpenAI in light of antitrust concerns.

AI RESEARCH

🦾AI Models Are Overconfident About Wrong Answers?

Large Language Models (LLMs) can complete an array of tasks, from translating articles to assisting with clinical diagnoses.

However, LLMs can be overconfident about wrong answers and underconfident about right answers, making it difficult to know when LLMs can be trusted.

To account for this, researchers and developers calibrate LLMs to ensure the confidence level matches the accuracy.

But since LLMs can be applied to a seemingly endless collection of diverse tasks, traditional calibration methods are ineffective.

To solve this issue, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab developed a calibration method tailored to LLMs called “Thermometer.”

Instead of directly calibrating LLMs, “Thermometer” trains an auxiliary AI model on datasets from multiple tasks.

The auxiliary AI model doesn’t directly train the LLMs. Instead, it learns to correct the LLM’s confidence estimates.
