🧠AI Mimics Our Brain to Process Visual Information

Scientists at Scripps Research developed “MovieNet,” an AI model that mimics how our brain processes visual information.
Key Details:
“MovieNet” is inspired by the brain’s visual processing region known as the optic tectum, where neurons (i.e., brain cells) assemble parts of moving images into coherent sequences.
“The brain doesn’t just see still frames; it creates an ongoing visual narrative,” said Director of the Dorris Neuroscience Center (DNC) Dr. Hollis Cline.
Unlike traditional AI models that process visual information in a series of still frames, “MovieNet” mimics how our brain makes real-time sense of the world.
“MovieNet” relies on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a network of specialized layers that detect visual patterns, such as edges, textures, and structures.
“MovieNet” also requires significantly fewer high-quality datasets and less processing power, making it more environmentally sustainable.
Why It’s Important:
When viewing video clips of tadpoles swimming under different lighting conditions, “MovieNet” achieved 82.3% accuracy in identifying abnormal swimming behaviors.
It even outperformed existing AI models, such as Google’s “GoogLeNet,” which achieved 72% accuracy in identifying abnormal swimming behaviors.

🎄Fourth Day of “12 Days of OpenAI” Event

OpenAI made Canvas available for all ChatGPT users during the fourth day of the “12 Days of OpenAI” event.
Key Details:
The “12 Days of OpenAI” event involves 12 livestreams across 12 days of “a bunch of new things, big and small.”
Canvas works with ChatGPT to write content or solve coding tasks beyond the simple conversational chatbot interface.
Canvas opens in a separate window, allowing you and ChatGPT to work side by side.
ChatGPT with Canvas can suggest edits, adjust response lengths, change reading levels, and offer inline feedback when writing content.
ChatGPT with Canvas can review code, add logs, fix bugs, and port to other coding languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or C++ when solving coding tasks.
Why It’s Important:
“Canvas offers a more natural interface for collaborating with ChatGPT,” said OpenAI’s Product Lead.
Microsoft owns 49% of OpenAI after investing over $13 billion. Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot is the world’s most popular AI-powered coding assistant. Maybe they’ll integrate Github Copilot into Canvas to streamline developer workflows.

🪨Tesla’s Humanoid Robot Tackles Difficult Terrains

In a recent post on X, Tesla showcased “Optimus-Gen 2” walking through challenging terrains such as steep, muddy, and bark-filled hills.
“Optimus-Gen 2” is a humanoid robot that autonomously performs unsafe, repetitive, or tedious tasks. Tesla leverages Neural Networks (NNs) with End-to-End Learning to build software stacks that enable “Optimus-Gen 2” to balance, navigate, and interact with the physical world.
NNs are an AI architecture designed to mimic the human brain. In this case, they’re trained on a large dataset filled with balancing, navigating, and interacting data. End-to-End Learning allows NNs to perform the actions in the raw data without explicit instructions from programmers.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk also recently filed a patent for an AI-powered Vision System that leverages a single NN to help “Optimus-Gen 2” process camera data and develop digital 3D environments without LiDAR or RADAR.
During Tesla’s 2024 Q1 Earnings Call, Musk explained how “Optimus-Gen 2” will “ultimately be worth more than the self-driving car business.” Musk believes humanoid robots will replace most manual labor jobs and present opportunities to extract critical resources during space missions.
