📊The AI Training Data Gold Rush

According to Reuters, Big Tech companies like Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI are racing to secure vast quantities of online data to train their AI models.

Key Details:
  • After OpenAI’s ChatGPT debuted in 2022, companies including Apple, Google, and Meta all struck agreements with stock image provider Shutterstock.

  • The agreements allowed those companies to access hundreds of millions of images, videos, and music files to train AI models. The deals with Big Tech firms initially ranged from $25 million to $50 million each.

  • Shutterstock competitor Freepik struck agreements with multiple technology companies to access an archive of 200 million images for smaller fees per image.

  • OpenAI has also licensed with several news organizations, such as The Associated Press and Axel Springer.

  • Google struck a licensing agreement with Reddit worth $60 million annually to retrieve user-generated content for training the Gemini models.

Why It’s Important:
  • There’s been a recent surge in copyright lawsuits and privacy concerns challenging how AI companies train their generative AI models to produce creative text formats.

  • An industry of specialized AI data firms is emerging to “ethically source” the rights to real-world content like podcasts, short-form videos, and interactions with digital assistants.

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT

🇺🇸The U.S. Strikes a Semiconductor Deal with TSMC

President Joe Biden announced a preliminary agreement through the CHIPS and Science Act with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufactory Company (TSMC) to build three advanced semiconductor factories in America.

Key Details:
  • TSMC will build a semiconductor factory in Phoenix, Arizona, investing over $65 billion and creating 25,000 direct manufacturing and construction jobs.

  • The agreement dedicates $50 million of the CHIPS and Science Act funding to training, developing, and deploying the local workforce according to industry standards.

  • The White House statement explained: “These facilities will manufacture the most advanced chips in the world, putting us on track to produce 20% of the world’s leading-edge semiconductors by 2030.”

Why It’s Important:
  • The U.S. relies heavily on foreign manufacturers for advanced semiconductors to power AI applications. This deal reduces reliance on external suppliers, potentially leading to more stable pricing and supply chains.

  • China dominates the rare earths market in mining, processing, and magnets used in advanced commercial and military technology. However, they lack the technical ability to leverage the raw materials to build world-leading semiconductor chips.

AI ETHICS

🦾Pioneering Tech’s Moral Code

Daily Trojan journalist Victoria Frank published an article exploring the world of “AI ethicists.”

Frank interviewed Morgan Sutherland, an emerging technology consultant, who fine-tuned OpenAI’s conversational chatbot to resolve value conflicts in a way that promotes a net positive impact on humanity. Sutherland expressed that “when you join a corporation, there are other people and incentives that you’re participating in.”

She also outlined and explained the three subfields of “AI ethicists:” AI ethics, AI safety, and AI alignment.
