• During the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24), Apple announced visionOS 2, the second-generation operating system for the Apple Vision Pro, to support more robust XR applications.

• visionOS 2 will boast AI-powered features such as creating spatial photos with images and intuitive hand gestures to quickly access vital information at a glance.

💵Amazon Ramps Up AI Development Spending

Amazon is ramping up AI development spending by hiring senior executives from AI agent startup Adept and licensing the company’s technology to enhance Amazon’s AI models and training datasets.

Key Details:

• Adept is an enterprise AI tool that executes manual, repetitive, end-to-end workflows across the tools your teams use every day.

• Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to AI models that perform tasks as well as humans and exhibit human traits such as critical reasoning, intuition, consciousness, sentience, and emotional awareness.

• Rohit Prasad, a senior vice president and head scientist who oversees Amazon’s AGI team, informed employees that the company hired Adept co-founder and CEO David Luan.

• Luan will lead Amazon’s newly formed “AGI Autonomy” division, reporting directly to Prasad.

• Amazon also secured a licensing agreement to utilize Adept’s technology, including multimodal AI models and refined datasets, to enhance the retail giant’s AI agent developments.

Why It’s Important:

• Amazon faces fierce competition from Big Tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta, which rapidly integrate AI add-ons into their core products and services while giving businesses more access to language models through their public cloud offerings.

• Amazon has invested over $4 billion to support Anthropic, a startup building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Amazon plans to overhaul its digital assistant called Alexa with GenAI capabilities to compose emails and place orders.

🦾OpenAI’s New CriticGPT Model

OpenAI published a research paper exploring how to streamline AI model training by deploying “AI critics” to spot errors in AI model outputs.

OpenAI trained an AI model on GPT-4 called CriticGPT to assist human trainers in catching errors in ChatGPT’s code output.

The company discovered that when human trainers receive help from CriticGPT to review ChatGPT’s code outputs, they outperform traditional human trainers by 60%.

CriticGPT also caught 85% of inserted bugs in AI-generated code, compared to just 50% from human reviewers alone.

CriticGPT was trained on “Reinforcement Learning From Human Feedback” (RLHF): a technique for aligning an AI agent to human preferences. RLHF incorporates human feedback into the training process to help AI agents self-learn more efficiently.
