🃏The OpenAI and Microsoft Bluff Battle Continues

Microsoft just released “MAI-Voice-1” and “MAI-1-preview,” signaling a strategic shift to reduce reliance on external partners like OpenAI.
Key Details:
“MAI-Voice-1” is an in-house speech generation model that converts brief text descriptions into natural, realistic, and expressive human-like voices. “MAI-1-preview” is an in-house foundation model designed to handle general-purpose everyday questions and generate contextually relevant answers.
OpenAI has been negotiating with Microsoft to rewrite the terms of their multi-billion-dollar partnership. Microsoft has invested over $13 billion into OpenAI, gaining access to cutting-edge AI models to develop AI-powered features for Microsoft 365 Apps.
Microsoft also gets 20% of OpenAI’s revenue until 2030. That means 20% of the money OpenAI earns from selling products or services is given to Microsoft. Now, OpenAI wants to reduce that amount from 20% to 10% to prioritize restructuring efforts.
OpenAI recently raised a $40 billion Series F funding round at a $300 billion valuation. However, SoftBank Group Inc.’s $30 billion investment is contingent on OpenAI restructuring into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).
OpenAI was founded as a non-profit organization before it added a “capped profit” framework called OpenAI LP in 2019, which essentially functions as a money-making company within the original non-profit organization. OpenAI plans to restructure OpenAI LP into a Delaware PBC that’s still controlled by the non-profit Board of Directors (BofD).
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI can’t just flip a switch and turn OpenAI LP into a Delaware PBC without Microsoft’s approval because it would risk a breach of contract. In other words, OpenAI needs Microsoft’s approval to restructure. The only issue is OpenAI and Microsoft don’t see eye to eye on anything right now.
Microsoft launching “MAI-Voice-1” and “MAI-1-preview” signals a clear shift toward self-reliance and a strategic choice to develop bargaining leverage when negotiating with OpenAI.

🦠AI-Powered Tool Improves the Flu Vaccine

Scientists at the MIT Jameel Clinic just developed “VaxSeer,” an AI-powered tool that predicts aggressive influenza strains to help identify the most effective seasonal vaccine candidates.
Key Details:
Every year, global health experts face a critical challenge: deciding which influenza strains to include in the upcoming seasonal vaccine. This decision must be made several months in advance. If the selected influenza strains are off, the seasonal vaccine fails to prevent severe illness.
Current seasonal vaccines provide limited protection against rapidly evolving influenza strains. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that seasonal vaccines in the U.S. worked less than 40% of the time between 2012 and 2021.
“VaxSeer” consists of two Deep Learning (DL) frameworks: the Dominance Predictor, which estimates the likelihood of an influenza strain spreading, and the Immunity Predictor, which assesses how effectively a seasonal vaccine will neutralize an influenza strain. Together, they accurately predict which virus variants will likely dominate the next flu season.
Why It’s Important:
In a 10-year retrospective study, scientists compared predictions made by “VaxSeer” against those made by the World Health Organization (WHO) for two major flu types: A/H1N1 and A/H3N2. For A/H3N2, it outperformed the WHO in 9 out of 10 flu seasons.
Improving influenza strain selections can enhance public health outcomes by reducing hospitalizations and limiting respiratory deaths. The WHO estimates that flu seasons cause between 290,000 and 650,000 respiratory deaths worldwide each year.
