The U.S. Supreme Court released its annual report on the court’s achievements throughout the year and addressed the threats AI models pose to the legal system.
Key Details:
Chief Justice John Roberts discussed the rise of AI models in the judicial system and explored its benefits, drawbacks, and ethical implications.
Roberts mentioned that AI models can dramatically increase access to key information for lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
He added that AI systems can improve access to justice, especially for litigants with limited resources.
Roberts also warned that AI models threaten to invade privacy interests and dehumanize the law.
He referenced several cases of lawyers presenting briefs with misleading AI-generated legal citations.
Robert’s main concern was the complex “gray areas that still require the application of human judgment.”
Why It’s Important:
Justice Robert’s section on AI systems signals the Supreme Court’s growing awareness of the potential impact of language models on the legal system.
For example, The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for abusing the newspaper’s intellectual property to train Large Language Models (LLMs).

Waymo’s driverless cars experienced 85% fewer injury crashes and 57% fewer police-reported crashes than human drivers.
Localized data showcased an 80% injury crash reduction in San Francisco, California.
Why It’s Important:
The Waymo Driver is already reducing traffic injuries and fatalities in local cities as it continues to manage risks while scaling operations.
Waymo is preventing road deaths and injuries, improving traffic flow and efficiency, and increasing mobility and accessibility by fueling advancements in the driverless car sector.
